   CHAPTER 1

A small child was trotting breathlessly up a cobbled road beside a stately looking lady wearing a large rather lopsided grey hat. The lady was walking exceptionally briskly for she was in quite a hurry, but the child did not dare ask her to slow down for she was too scared. Most children at the age of five are shy at meeting a new adult, and this child was no exception. The child's name was in fact Hazeldene, but as that was not considered a good christian name she was known as Hazel.

Let me now describe the two figures; The lady was tall and thin due to the tight corset underneath her grey fairly fashionable dress, her face hard and unkind looking yet bearing the features of a fairly attractive woman- her eyes were a deep sea green, nose shapely yet the permenant expression she wore seemed a state of loathing for every living thing around. The child however was pale with large innocent hazel eyes and a worried face. her cropped hair brunette and her plain white starched dress which restricted her movements showed she was poor. Despite her hair and clothes,( i will now call 'her' by her name) Hazel was a very pretty creature and one would probably feel very sad to see her in such a way.

"We are there child." announced the woman in a way showing no emotion whatsoever.

The child remained silently looking at the vast red stone building whilst the woman knocked loudly. It seemed like a castle to her, coming from a small prison-like charity school- well, it was small compared to this.

" Good day?" The door had been opened to reveal  a tubby man in a black waistcoat.

"Do you want to speak to the master?, I am the butler. The lady glanced breifly at him as if he was completely beneath her, then sought for her watch to look at. She turned to speak.

" I am afraid I do not have time to talk, I only came to drop off this." She gestured to Hazel.

" Oh yes, I heard about the master adopting some 'orphan' from that charity institution, what's his name?   The butlers words came as a bad offence to hazel.

"I am NOT a boy!" The butler jumped around." hazel was looking at him with a pained expression.

"Hazel, there is no need to be rude!" the lady said sharply as the child shrank back. The lady then turned to her heel, leaving the butler standing there with Hazel, and walked away.
