They stumbled through the station, flinching at the sudden flashing lights and the thunder of passing trains. The smaller of the two looked up at her partner.
"Maybe we shouldn't have left." Her gaze was filled with concern. She jumped as another train clattered past. The pair pushed through the mass of people until they came to an empty bench. The woman sank down gratefully onto the concrete seat, and her partner settle down beside her, draping a protective arm around her shoulders.
"Paul...I'm not sure it was right to leave." The woman blinked down at her hands, which were resting on her swollen stomach. Paul took one of her hands in both of his.
"Ann. They'll be better off growing up away from that place." Ann looked up at him, tears shining in her eyes.
"But they'd be safer there. Out here, they'd have nothing. No place to live, no one to run to...at least back there they'd know where their next meal was coming from."
"But they're free out here, Ann. You know what those people are like, what they can do."
"I'm just not sure anymore!"
Paul took his love in his arms, her tears leaving stains on his shirt.
"It'll all be okay. I promise. Everything will work out."
