Please note: I know next to nothing about the Bronx. Please excuse any views expressed in this story that you find untrue or offensive. I have done minimal research and have described the Bronx this way for story purposes only. I sincerely apologize if any of this is hurtful or offensive.

As he slouched around the corner, his sisters quickly came into sight. He quickly walked in the other direction, until his sisters faded out of sight. They headed off to school. The "Discovery High School " was, according to the mayor," an educating and rehabilitating school for the troubled youth of the Bronx".  However, if you managed to look through the web of deceit and lies that it appears only he knew existed, then you would see the school how he saw it: stuck up teachers who were angry at being assigned to the worst school district on the face of the earth. Many teachers took out their anger on the students, who received a sub-average education anyway. Arguments and yelling were borderline common, but rumors that some harsh teachers beat students weren't really rumors, they were fact. A particularly nasty old man had apparently even raped a junior, but insisted it was not true. The city was short on teachers anyway and couldn't afford to hire more, so the school insisted that the teacher was innocent. No charges were filed, but the girl somehow contracted herpes while still a virgin. However, Javier thought as he walked slowly down the sidewalk towards his job, "I am still expected to go." His sisters were fine. Katy and Sadie looked out for themselves. They had a razor sharp round and wit (something he knew all to well) but were also fast. They could confuse people, and when that didn't work, run. They also looked out for Courtney. She was only a freshmen, virtually unknown in the school. That was, until she was beaten by her history teacher for not knowing the date of Christopher Columbus's crossing. She became so  infamous and students wouldn't go near her, let alone try and befriend her, for fear of retribution. He had just concluded for the thousandth time that it was a real hellhole when he walked into the diner where he worked.
