I open my eyes...
Dim light is all around.
My body is stiff.
My head mildly pounds.
Suddenly,
The door opens a crack.
And someone comes in.
A young women to be exact.
With a tear stricken face
And unkempt black hair.
She approaches me slowly,
Returnin' my stare.
She asks me how I feel,
Tells me I'm here for one more night.
But that the doctors say physically-
I'm perfectly alright.
She looks at me for a minute.
That minute becomes three.
Makes me wonder If she'll say more
Or if she will just leave.
Finally,
After, to what my clouded head, seems like weeks
The fair skinned girl begins to speak.
She says that I'm her man,
That I'm her best friend.
That we promised to stay together
Till the very end.
She says that we take walks,
Always talking for hours.
That every now and then,
I surprise her with flowers.
She says I make her feel real.
That I helped her love herself.
That I was there for her,
When she was abandoned by everyone else.
She says that being with me
Is why she has peace when she sleeps.
That before I came along,
She was one depressed heap.
She says that I'm the love of her life.
And that that's how it should be.
She says she wouldn't make it,
If without me, she had to be.
She continues on and on,
Her eyes welling with tears.
She says that this very day,
Marks us being together four years.
The tears in her blue eyes, makes me tear up too.
Because despite all she says
And despite her genuine look of distraught-
For the life of me, remember her, I cannot.
