Running a double life was never easy. Luckily, Robin didn't have to hide his identity from the rest of the world. He could be as open as he wanted to be. Most people had something big to hide when they lived two lives, maybe they were a hero or a villain. Robin? By day he was a lawyer, not well known, but a good one at least. By night he took stage, cracking jokes and offending millions around the globe. Not many people thought the two would mix well, but, Robin pulled it off.
Tonight was the show to top all shows, the highlight of his career, as a comedian at least. Tired as he was, he was pumped up as well. Adjusting his suit, (he hadn't changed, why bother?) the brown haired man walked out onto stage casually, grinning confidently. Chocolate hued eyes gleaming as he took his seat, he crossed his legs and grabbed a mic, nodding head to the audience slightly.
"Everyone doin' well tonight?" Cheers echoed throughout the theatre, and he couldn't stop his grin from widening. Some people got nervous with all of this attention, but, the thing with comedy, was that you couldn't mess up. It was a lot less stressful than the courtroom.
"I'll take that as a yes," As Robin spoke, his eyes scanned the crowd, ever so often pausing on a face, and only able to force himself to keep a straight face as he saw a far too familiar face in the crowd.
Automatically he moved onto a story, keeping the same expression on his face as he forced himself to move his eyes as well. They just had to show up, didn't they? Sucking in a breath of the now seemingly hot air, Robin's mouth seemed to move faster than his brain, pushing out the story while he thought of other things.
The show seemed to drag on forever, now, with their eyes on him, and the end couldn't come fast enough. He needed to leave. Robin felt as if he was flushed, acting casual as he stood, but unable to shoot another look to the red haired friend he had in the crowd. Robin knew he didn't have much time.
Stumbling off stage, the comedian of law made a quick escape, tripping over his own feet and almost hitting the floor. Crap. They'd seen him fall, they knew of his fear. Oh, god, no.
Robin tried to pack up quickly, only focused on leaving now. He didn't respond as people tried to reach him, shoving papers into his back, grabbing his phone. But, it couldn't go fast enough. His hands shook, fear only rising further in his throat as he heard footsteps behind him.
It was Elmo.
"Elmo thinks you've been a bad boy."
His fluffy red hands took his own in theirs, Robin's brown eyes slowly turning to look at the short, soft man. Terror caused his pupils to widen, unable to tear his eyes away from the small creature that held his hand. Slowly Robin pulled away.
"Why are you here?"
"Elmo thinks bad boys need to be punished."
Robin's breathing caught in his throat, turning to face the orange nosed monster.
"Go back to hell where you belong, demon beast." Breathed the taller man, backing up and getting ready to run, but freezing as Elmo pulled a small revolver out of the leg of his jeans. It'd been years since his show, and he'd changed so much. Elmo was no longer the man Robin once had loved.
"Elmo thinks that maybe you should think before you speak." He said, referring to himself in the 3rd person as usual. Robin's legs shook, feeling like jello.
"No...no...I-I'm sorry, Elmo." He breathed, tears blurring his vision as he backed up another step. But, Elmo's eyes didn't change, as hard, and as plastic as always. Staring, never blinking. Robin flinched as the safety was turned off.
"Elmo thinks... you don't mean it." The words were hissed by the puppet, Robin practically in tears as he turned to run. He only made it a few steps before pain exploded in his knee and he collapsed, the sound of the gunshot echoing throughout the theatre, by no doubt drawing attention to the room where they were.
"You're in Elmo's World now, Robin." Robin clawed at the ground, trying to escape his muppety fate as footsteps continued towards him now.
The door flew open as Elmo stepped on the comedians ruined knee, causing him to scream as he laughed.
Than it all went black, first slowly, then all at once.
Next he awoke, it was to the smell of bleach and the blinding white of the ceiling. Was he in a hospital? Must be. Robin's eyes fluttered closed again, movements and thoughts sluggish, still partially asleep. Something soft was in his hand, fuzzy fingers rubbing into his palm as he struggled to tug it away.
No...no he needed to get away.
"Elmo loves Robin... and Robin will love Elmo. Forever."
