Staring at her textbooks, as the artificial heat blasted from the classroom's radiators, made Darcy Millers think. What if I could be invisible? Would people miss me? What if I gave my work to somebody else? Would they get more recognition than me? Her what-if's made her head pound with a headache, and she carved rainbows and 3D squares into her desk to soothe her aching mind. Finally the bell rang and the screeching sound of metal against the freshly waxed floors ment that Darcy could finally head home and focus on something she actually cared about.
"Hey Darcy! Want to come over this afternoon?" Viviana Kendrick caught up with her best friend in the bustling halls of Morrison Woods Acadamy.
"Nah. I'm good. I have a biology project to work on." The tenth grader lied.
"We'll what about next afternoon?" Viviana struggled to keep up with her now.
"I'm sorry, I just don't have time." Darcy rushed, trying to shake Viviana.
Viviana was this little freshman that followed Darcy around like a lost puppy.
The minute Darcy caugh her breath at her locker, she shoved her biology binder under her arm and buttoned up her tweed jacket all the way up to her chin. Escaping school for the day had always been Darcy's favorite part of the day.
"Hellllooooo?" A rosy cheeked Darcy peeled of her soggy layers in the warmth of her home's foyer.
No answer. Only the lowly whisper of the falling snow outside.
"Well then." Darcy huffed. Another afternoon home alone.
She quickly grabbed a packet of Oreos and some warm milk. Cracking open her binder, Darcy got straight to work on her project. Almost half of it was done when she checked her watch.
12:30 AM
Darcy sighed and picked up her binder, laying it by her coat on her way to her room. Her parents still weren't home but that was nothing unusual. Her parents had high paying jobs that were apparently more important than their own daughter.
"Will I ever be loved?" Darcy sighed, tears trickling down her face as she drifted off to sleep that night.
The next day was nothing special either. Unless you count falling asleep in geometry special.
"Miss Millers! For the third time! What is the equation for finding the diameter of a circle?!" Her teacher scolded her.
"Oh! Um-Pi times the radius squared." Darcy's answer rolled of her tongue as if it were tumbling down Niagra Falls.
"Correct. Now try to stay awake in my class. I will not tolerate you sleeping in here." Her teacher said sternly.
"Sorry." Darcy whimpered.
The rest of the day went by as slow as possible but finally lunch came. She grabbed her tray, a milk, paid for it all, and sat down in the far corner of the cafeteria. Putting in her earbuds, she scrolled through her playlist on her iPod, finally settling on listening to One Republic on repeat. She slumped down in her chair as far as possible without being noticed.
