It was a school morning. Fresh brisk air was flowing in through an open school window.
The gust blew papers off my desk. They floated in the air briefly, and scattered across the floor. I stared intently and then I bent down to pick them all up.
There was a page with a drawing of a girl with a katana, fighting off evil like she says she does.
This reminded me of reality and thought of the oncoming brain fart about to enter the classroom.
Every fucking day.
It was the same routine. Every time.
At around 2nd period she enters. She runs in, so fast her long black and brown hair is a blur.
Not her though. She's always so clear. Pretty but not beautiful.
I had to remind myself she was crazy. We were about to witness another rescue, one we couldn't save ourselves or her from.
I didn't know it then but only she could've done it. Because she had fabricated the illusion herself.
Why?
No idea.
"Everyone get out now!!" She shouts.
Noone leaves.
"Don't you want to live!?"
The look on her face was amazingly convincing. She held no weapons, but she tells us she wields a katana. With this imaginary weapon she strikes an invisible enemy. She stops her strike in mid air, as if she had impact against it.
Sparks flew.
I repeat actual sparks.
This wasn't the first time.
They were flashes, sometimes she would slide under a table and I would see a giant foot. Bloody but very there. She went on for about an hour, swerving past nothing. Trying to save the class from nothing. Achieving nothing.
All while the class paid no attention to her. Then she went psycho.
"There will be more, but I'm not going to protect you alone. You either believe me or not. But when the world ends, would you rather choose how or watch it unfold?"
We all watched as she took up her imaginary sword and ran out the window and into the sky.
Otaku Girl was leaping into the air. Bounding like gravity was an invisible staircase.
We all mouthed her badly, joked around and then realized she had just defied the laws of physics.
Numbers were called authorities were informed, it was funny because, she had no friends, or relatives. Otaku girl was her only known alias. The school let her in because even though she was a nut case, she was a bright mind in the classes she did try and attend.
The manhunt began the next day. At nightfall. The school was instantly covered in tents like a bad breakout. We the students would be asked to volunteer as hunting and searching dogs.
This was good because it wasn't your cliche army takes over no one here or there thing. We were all cool with it.
We were given radios, a tranq gun, and a tracker.
Spread out across the vast school ground we would search. It was a clear night sky. The moon was out and no clouds. I was moving around in the open air canteens, where I could scab some vending treats.
Sipping cola staring at a tree. Turning around and seeing a white haired boy. Sipping cola.
Wait....The boy jumped first. He lunged fist first. I held my gun and slammed it against his hand. He countered with a kick, blocked swiftly with my gun.
The force of blocking that attack knocked the gun out of my hand, and threw us both in opposed directions.
The gun landed next to the vending machine.
The boy was standing in a weird way. He was leaning to the left exposing his right side. He lay his left hand to his rib and it glowed blue. A mark appeared in the air and a large cut was made into his stomach. Out slid four long neon purple tentacles.
Two on each side of his upper body he looked like Dr Octopus with white hair. His eyes a glowing blue.
I ran to the vending machine. And picked up the gun. He was moving closer with his protruding extra limbs helped him forward.
I shot. Missed. He took me by the collar with one tentacle. Held me up two feet off the ground.
The boy's eyes were gazing at me. He was slowly raising another tentacle, poised for attack.
He stabs. He misses.
"Kaneki?"
The boy turns. Otaku Girl is descending her way towards us,
"Leave him, he will be of use to us. Take him."
The boy slashes across the back of my neck.
In a split second it happens.
I shoot the girl.
Who slits the air.
She hits the boy.
Our weapons fall down in a clattering heap.
We all fall down.
