Note: Although this is an Avengers one-shot based off of the movie, I do make a few references to the Spider-Man comics. :P

I basically jumped out of my chair when my watch alarm went off at 12:30, signaling that it was time for my lunch break. Yes! Every day at work revolved around me looking forward to my lunch break, and dreading when it was over. I hated the office. Don't get me wrong: I loved writing. But my office at the Daily Bugle was rather boring, and I often got stuck writing about all of the stuff that no one cared about, myself included. All of the gray, black, and white furniture seemed to drain me of my creativity, and all I had to look at out the window was the crowded Manhattan street. Plus, my boss always smoked a cigar, and I couldn't stand the smell of it.
I quickly made sure that I had everything that I needed before leaving my desk and heading to the door.
"I want you back here no later than 1:30, Ms. Bishop," my boss barked at me as I left. Although everyone else at the Daily Bugle referred to me by my first name, Alison, Mr. Jameson insisted on using my surname, which annoyed me to no end. It sounded way too formal.
"Yes, Mr. Jameson," I called over my shoulder, speaking as politely as I could even though I hated the man. I needed this job, though, so I couldn't risk losing it by not holding my tongue.
I took a taxi to a nearby shawarma joint that I often ate at for lunch. The first time that I walked in, I had been rather nervous that I would get a strange disease from the food, seeing that the restaurant was rather sketchy. However, I found, to my surprise, that the food was actually rather good, so I started coming here on a regular basis. There was never any crowd, so it was a great place to stop for my lunch break when I needed to get back to work quickly.
As I waited for my food, I watched the news, which was playing on the small television mounted on the wall. I had already seen countless reports similar to it, though, in the past 48 hours. Two days ago, there had been some sort of conflict at a party in Germany. The press didn't really know all the details, but apparently some crazy guy crashed the gala and ripped a man's eyeball out before being confronted by two popular public figures: Iron Man and Captain America.
The security cameras had captured everything, but some of what I saw didn't make sense. I watched as the footage was played again: The killer, a man easily identified by his shoulder-length black hair, walked down the stairs with some sort of cane in his hand. He used it to knock one guy unconscious before grabbing another and flipping him over with one arm - how was that even possible? - onto something in the ballroom that looked like an altar. Then the chaos began: he began pulling the man's eye out with some sort of drill thing while everyone ran around screaming.
The next part was the portion that was really confusing. I watched the screen as the killer walked outside into the square. One moment, he was wearing a suit, but a second later, he was in what appeared to be armor, along with a really weird helmet that had horns on it. And then there were four more of him, packing the people together.
It made no sense. No sense at all. But that was what the cameras showed, and it was what I saw. It was obviously what all of the news reporters saw, too. Every time the footage was played, they all began conversing confusedly at this part.
The dark-haired man made all of the people kneel, and then began rambling on with a bunch of crap about how humans were made to be ruled. I kept watching as Captain America suddenly landed from a jet just as the killer was about to murder an old man. It was common knowledge who Captain America was: during WWII, he had been injected with a serum that gave him super strength and reflexes. Then he had crashed a plane into icy waters, where he had been frozen for seventy years until he was recently found.
