“Thanks for having me over Kate, I appreciate it, especially when your dad’s in hospital and with everything going on, I-” my apology was cut short by a bone crushing embrace, “hey-, okay-...” Kate finally withdrew her head from my shoulder and untangled her limbs from my body.
“Iona, I would do anything for you just to see you smile again. After all that bastard put you-” she stopped herself from exploding into another passionate rant about my ex-boyfriend. “We shall not speak his name.” She swore with her hand over her heart, this gesture made me giggle, we had both promised to sever that boy my life completely, “he does not exist!”
This time I was the one who engulfed her in a hug, her hand knitted jumper smelled like wood fire and incense, calming and mediative. I think she had knitted it as her summer project last year, that’s Kate for you, always doing something new, adventurous and impulsive. It was a little bit baggy and hung off of one shoulder, knitted with thick dark blue wool.
“Anyway, I really better get going otherwise I’ll be cycling blind, the sun’s about to set,” I looked towards the sky for affirmation, squinting from the last few daggers of light.
“Call me when you get home Iona,” I nodded sharply and turned to let myself out of the house, god knows I’ve been there enough times to consider it my second home.
“I will,” Kate was a little bit paranoid, even though no one could blame her after her dad’s accident. “Night Katie, GOODNIGHT LUCY,” I called over Kate’s small auburn head.
“G’NIGHT IONA, DON’T FALL OFF OF YOUR BIKE AGAIN!” Kate’s stepmother called back from one of the many rooms in Kate’s rather large house.
I rolled my eyes at the jibe, and Kate smiled at my reaction and shrugged her shoulders as if to agree with Lucy. “Alright I’ve had enough of you now, get on yer bike?!”
I shook my head allowing my wavy hair to float around my face like a jellyfish. Picking up my helmet, safety first and all, I mounted my rusty silver road bike and lifted my foot to the pedal.
“So long,” I saluted.
“Just get out of here!” Kate said shooing me off down the country lane, “Call me!” She lifted an imaginary phone to her ear and shot me a wink.
Looking up at the sky again I sighed, the sun had moved about half way towards the horizon, it was now a race against the light.

The wind felt good blowing a steady jet into my face throwing my hair out behind me like a cape and stretching my clothes against my body. I sailed effortlessly down the country track passing field after field, hedge after hedge and tree after tree.
