Well, in case you were wondering, biology class wasn't so bad (unless you call looks from Kennedy creepy). I'd have to say that lunch was much worse.

I got my sloppy mystery meat and almost tripped on the way to a table the 12th graders had trashed.

I didn't mind sitting by myself, I ate like a pig anyway.

I plopped my backpack on the ground by my scuffed up converse and heard a large thud, like a rock crashing against the tile floor.

Of course, it wasn't nearly loud enough to interrupt the afternoon cafeteria buzz.

Apparently, The Fates, who were my guardians by adoption at the time, packed me an old, moldy, funky shaped, cupcake in my backpack which had been smashed in its plastic bag. It had a piece of paper covered in nasty frosting that read "Happy birthday terd." "Wow," I said aloud to myself, "how generous."

But hey, at least they tried to be nice right?

Unless there was poison infused in the cupcake that would paralyze me momentarily and make me have a seizure.

Yup, there was probably poison.

" No way am I eating that." I thought to myself.

I tossed it aside and let it land along the other trash on the table. I began stabbing my mystery meat as if it were alive and I had to subdue it.

As I sat poking my mush I started to think about Kennedy.

"Who does she think she is,"

I pondered.

"it's not like she owns the school and can do what ever she wants! Uuugh she makes me so mad!"

Little did I know, my eyebrows had furrowed and my lips were pursed as my thoughts continued.

"Are you okay?" An unfamiliar voice asked.

I stopped poking my food and fixed my expression. I looked up to find a boy with stunning, flint gray eyes. He had golden brown hair like me and wore a "math camp" T-shirt. He wore several bracelets and a black cord peeked from underneath his shirt.

"Great" I thought "a nerd."

But all nerdieness aside he was handsome. He looked like a popular kid.

"Is there something wrong with your food?" He inquired.

I finally pried my eyes away from his and started fiddling with my many necklaces

"Uh, n-no," I managed, trying not to blush.

"You hardly know this guy! SNAP OUT OF IT you just met him!" I said to myself.

I straightened "I was just..... thinking." I tried to put on a straight face.

He smirked, as if he knew there was more than that, sending shivers down my spine.

It wasn't in a creepy Kennedy kind of way, it was almost reassuring. I don't know why, but I felt like I could trust this guy with anything.

That creeped me out.

"Is this seat taken?"

Man, he sure liked asking questions.

"No, no it's not," I replied my voice cracking a little " I don't know why you would want to sit next to me anyway." I tried to sound tough, but I didn't think that this guy would buy it.

He brushed some trash aside to make some room to put down his tray, but he didn't seem interested in his food either.

He offered me his hand "The name's Oliver."

I shook his hand "Bradley."

He nodded as if to say,

Yeah, I knew that.

I tried not to stare so I looked around the cafeteria only to find Kennedy staring me down.

I thought that she must have sent this guy over to mess with me. Which made me mad.

We locked eyes, which probably looked ridiculous.

"She thinks she's so cool. What does she want from me anyway?"

"Uh, Bradley? You're uh, kinda smoking." Interrupted Oliver.

My first thought was,

That is the cheesiest pickup line I have ever heard.

I pulled my eyes away from Kennedy's her eyes had gotten wide.

I glared at Oliver thinking he was nuts, but I then realized I was literally smoking.

I saw the gray smoke swirling from my clenched fists.

"That's new"

"Uh, sorry Oliver," I told him inspecting my hands " that doesn't normally happen."

He shrugged "It's cool, I've seen worse."

I've seen worse.

THAT scared me a little.

Who does this guy think he is?

I picked at my food to get that off of my mind.
"So," he tried "have yo-" he was interrupted mid-sentence by the bell for dismissal.

Saved by the bell, ironic.

I quickly shouldered my backpack and turned to Oliver who was getting his stuff together.

" Thanks Oliver, I enjoyed the company." I admitted.

He nodded "anytime, see you later!"

"I doubt it."

I turned on my heel and headed for the exit only to run into Kennedy.

Whoopee.

"What do you think your doing?" She asked me tapping her foot.

"Um, it's the dismissal bell so, I'm going to fourth period." I replied sarcastically trying to sidestep out of her way, but she blocked me.

"That's not what I meant Bradley. Oliver is mine stay away from him. Or else."

Oh, this was a jealousy situation.

"Calm down Kennedy. We aren't even friends. I guess you could say we're acquaintances nothing more."

She folded her arms and scrunched her freckle infested nose. "You better be right." She threatened" or I'll make your life miserable."

I couldn't see how my life could get much worse, but I nodded and she let me through her posse giggling behind her.

What Oliver had said kept running through my mind.

I've seen worse

I doubted it before, but I had a feeling Oliver and I would meet again.
