I was in the meadow near my small house, laying down and taking in the sights and smells of the different flowers. I came here alot. Sometimes to think, sometimes to cool off after a giant fight, sometimes just to get away from the noise of the small yet crowded village that I called home. This meadow was the only place I was sure I could find quiet in, if only for a short amount of time, but I came for another eason, too. This meadow was the only place I could feel my Parallel with me. Unlike everybody else in the world, at age 20, I still had gotten no sign that my fate had been entertwined with anothers.
You see, every single child in the world had a Parallel and an alter-ego. A person you were destined to meet and a person you were destined to love. Parallels are basically your soul mate, the person who you see in your dreams, the perfect person for you. Your Alter-ego, or Alter, is the person who is destined to help you find your Parallel, essentially your best friend.
Each child gets a half of a very unique necklace, a necklace so unique that only one other person in the entire world owns it.The other owner is your Parallel.
Alters are a different story. Your Alters necklace comes to you in your dreams, and once you recieve the image, you never forget it. Alters are generally near to you at all times in your life, you just don't know who it is. Alters are chosen to help you go on your quest to find your Parallel, and they are to be with you at all times.
I was lucky to have found my alter extremely early in my life. You'd think that would make up for a late Parallel, but I'm a hopeless romantic and my Alter could never shut up about his Parallel.
As I was thinking of my Alter, I feel a shadow fall over me, and I open one eye. The man towering above me flashes a white smile and lays down next to me, heaving a great big sigh as his head fallsl onto the flowers beneath us.
"How'd you find me here, Dmitri?" I ask, lifting my head to look at him. He sighs again and turns to face me, dark hair falling into his eyes.
"C'mon Chris, our minds are technically entertwined. It was only a matter of time before I found out where you were disappearing to every night," He says, sitting up and pulling his knees to his chest. "I know why you come out here all the time. You know, you're not the only one without a Parallel yet. I mean, your Parallel doesn't have one yet either." He smiles again, and I give him my best death glare.
"Shut it, banana boy." I whisper, and his face contorts into a scowl. I jump up as soon as I see him move, and I run. He was right behind me, and gaining way.
"It was one time!" He yells, and I let out a heartfelt, tummy rumbling laugh, losing all control of my balance and falling, him doing the same. We sit there for a while, talking and laughing until I realize what time it is.
"We gotta go back home, Dmitri, it's almost midnight, and its about to rain." I say, taking off my jacket and holding it over my head to protect myself from the rain. I start jogging, breaking into a full out run when I see Dmitri was following me.
"Whatever, It's not like you're gonna melt from it, wicked witch!" Dmitri yells, running after me until we reach my apartment.
We stand there panting slightly until I pull out my keys and unlock the door. We walk in and sit on the couch, watching some stupid soap opera until Dmitri realises it was almost midnight.
"I'm gonna call Alexis, she's probably wondering where I am." Dmitri states, producing his phone from his pocket, while I slumplower on the couch, letting out a great big sigh. I absolutely hate Alexis. She was the bane of my entire existence.
Alexis is Dmitri' s Parallel. Tall and blonde and beautiful and perfect, she was out to get me. Now, I know what your thinking. 'But Chris, aren't you and Dmitri Alters? Doesn't that mean you like the same things?'. I thought that too, until she tried to practically murder my social reputation in high school. Spreading rumers, attaching notes to my back, the works.
As Dmitri gets off the phone, he turns to me and picks me up in the greatest, biggest hug I've ever experienced.
"Happy Birthday! You are officially twenty years old!" He yells in my ear, and I try to get a look at the clock, catching a glimpse of the number 12.
"It is! I am!" I yell, finally realizing what's happening and why Dmitri was practically throwing me in the air.
As Dmitri puts me down from his ginormous bear hug, I hold out my hands. "So...... What you get me?!" I ask jumping up and down.
"You can't necessarily hold what I got you. But it's an awesome surprise! Promise!" He says and he put his hands on my shoulders, as if preparing me for something. "OKAY, are you ready for this, Chris?" He asks, practically bouncing in excitement.
"Yes. I'm ready. I can do this." I say, mockingly reassuring him.
"Your present is.......WE'RE GOING ON AN ADVENTURE TO FIND YOUR PARALLEL!" He yells and stars at me, waiting for my reaction.
"Dmitri! That's amazing, thank you so much!" I practically tackle him in a hug and plant a kiss on his cheek, dancing around in pure joy. He dances with me for a while, and after a few minutes he tells me happy birthday one last time and leaves for his and Alexis' house.
I get ready for bed and climb under my covers, thoughts of this adventure running through my head.
"Maybe this is it. Maybe I'll finally be able to meet my Parallel. Finally, I get to do it."
"I finally get a love of my own."
As I drift to sleep, I smile, finally realizing just how amazing this birthday was going to be.
