The droplets of dew sparkled in the morning sunlight like diamonds sprinkled across the grass. It was cold against her bare feat but she didn't really mind. The only thing she as woried about was Darren, her mum's boyfriend. At the moment Mackenzie's mum was in Turkey for her job and wouldn't be back for atleast another week.
Mackenzie wasn't like other kids her age, she was actually 14 but didn't know what other children her age were like. She had never gone to school so she only knew her mum and Darren. She had never seen her father as he went to fight in the army and still hadn't returned.
Mackenzie had a little wooden play house at the bottom of the garden that had been there since she was 5 and felt as if it was the only safe place where she could go to get away from every thing. The play house was a light brown colour with a forest green door, it had most of Mackenzie's toys in from when she was little. It was now in need of a new coat of paint and some of the wood had begin to rot letting a slight draft creep in. But from inside you could see a beautiful view of fthe valley which surrounded the house.
In the corner of the play house was an old brass box which belonged to Mackenzie's great, great, great grandfather. After he passed away it was given to his son and had finally been handed down to her. Sadly it was locked and after 350 years it still hadn't been opened. It was said that the key was hidden in the underground tunnels beneath the house, but many people have got lost down there and were never seen again. Strangely, it was all around the time of Mackenzie's grandfather before he died.
Only one person has come out alive from the tunnels but ended up becoming insane talking about creatures that lurk in the shadows waitng for you to fall asleep. His name was Geofrey Kings, he had a son and a wife who ended up moving around the area Mackenzie lived in.
There was something special about Mackenzie and she could tell. Only she had realised because she hardly ever saw her mum and Darren didn't even say hello to her when she saw him which just shows how much he cared. But only she noticed, it would be in the corner, when she was in the garden or in bed at night. Mackenzie saw somethig in the corner of her eye or she would hear quiet whispers from inside the walls.
Darren never liked Mackenzie much and since her mum went away he had began to show it more. First it was just trying to annoy her but it got worse by the day. He had started to swear at her or even slap her if she did something wrong, especially this morning, she had got up early and decided to make breakfast for the both of them. Darrn didn't want what she had made and threw the plate at her, that was why she was running to the playhouse.
As Mackenzie slowed down she turned around to see if Darren had followed her but luckily he hadn't. When she stepped inside the playhouse all she could hear was her heart pounding in her chest and the rasping sound of her breathing deeply in and out. Suddenly she could hear tiny voices outside but yet again Mackenzie couldn't make out what they were saying. She peered out the window to see if it was Darren teasing her but there was no one there. That was when she realised the wispering had stopped but as she turned to walk to the other side of the play house it started again.
That evening after tea Darren called Mackenzie over to him, "Mackenzie, you know that bow you have in that playhouse of yours? Well they say that there is curse which your great, great, great whatever grandfather put on it, it is transferred from the box to it's owner every time it is given to some one new. I have heard that it makes people see and hear thngs which arn't actually there," Darren said in a whisper . "And the only way you can get rid of the curse is if you find the key and get whats inside the box, that is the only way to stop you ending up like your great grandfather's who some could still be alive today if it wasn't for that box." He finnished with a smirk.
Mackenzie rolled her eyes "That's a load of shit and you know it!" with that she ran upstairs and locked her bedroom door. A minute later she heard a Darren pounding on the door yelling at her.
Later that night Mackenzie was sat up in bed thinking about what Darren had said earlier because at the time she was trying to ignore him, thinking that he was just trying to wind her up but as she thought about it she began to wonder about that her grandfather could still be alive today but he had one missing for at least 4 months and was then found shot through the head at the bottom of his pond being weighed down by a large stone that was tied to him. It was only till a very humid day 3 years ago when his pond had become shallow. The police said that he had committed suicide after losing his mind saying that he was seeing and hearing things like Mackenzie had begun to do.
Then she remembered that she had only begun to see things the day she recieved the box through the post when she was around 12. The year she would have started secondary school...
