"Be safe Kate," My mom whispers into my ear as she hugs me awkwardly goodbye. "Be safe."
I giggle to myself and slip from her grip. "I will be mom. See you Sunday night."
"Have a fun trip girls! I'll miss you Kate!" My little brother shouts from behind Audrey and I as we make our way onto the go train.
We're leaving Rochester behind us as we head towards Pennsylvania State University in Philadelphia. The main reason for the trip is too take a look at the university and decide if I want to cheer or play volleyball for them when I go away to school, but it's mostly to hangout with my brother who attends the university. I take my seat next to the window and Audrey takes the aisle seat. Automatically, we each put in our headphones and blast our tunes. I rest my head against the window and watch the first snowflakes of the year float to the ground. It's very late for the snow to come, but the weather has been warm lately. I've always loved the beauty in snowflakes, how every flake is different. They float softly through the air, melting as soon as they hit the ground.
A hand jerks me awake.
"Were almost at Grand Central." Audrey says. It takes a few seconds for me to understand what she's talking about, then I remember that I'm on a train to go visit my brother. We have a switch over in New York City.
"How long do we have at Grand Central?" She asks.
I pull out our train tickets and check what time our next train leaves at. "Around an hour. We can go get food then head over to the gate."
Grand Central station is a maze. It's so big compared to the one-track station in Rochester. We make our way to the food court and take a look at our choices. Audrey goes for Cinnabun, while I settle for Subway. By the time we get our food and track down our gate, we have no time to spare.
"Holy shit that was close." Audrey laughs as we quickly devour our food in line.
We take our seats about half way through the train and I can barely sit still. Even though this is the third year my brothers been away at school, I still miss him incredibly. Butterflies turn in my stomach when I think about one of his roommates, Brad. Him and I have the whole "forbidden love" thing going on. Basically he just comments on all my posts and we text every once and a while. Deep down, I'm hoping to hook up with his this weekend. Maybe he'll be my first.
Audrey's voice awakes me from my daydream. "How are we getting from the train station to your brothers house?"
"He's picking us up."
"Joshua has a car?" She asks puzzled.
"No, one of his roommates has one, a Mercedes I think."
Audrey grins from ear to ear. "So we're driving in style!"
"Only the best for the best." I giggle. "We should be there in about an hour."
Audrey pulls her MacBook out of her backpack and starts it up.
"Wanna watch a movie?" She asks.
I nod and she turns on some artsy film. I plug my headphones in but barely listen. How can I focus on the love life of fictional characters when I'm so wrapped up in my own? A billion thoughts were racing around my head. What do I say to Brad? Do I give him a hug when I get there? Do I initiate something romantic? I can't go with the flow. It's one of my many flaws. I try to plan out everything, every conversation and action. Although they never actually go as planned.
