Prologue
“But it was a trick,
And the clock struck twelve…”
-- Brick by Boring Brick, Paramore
I ran.
I ran, because if I didn’t, our lives would be the forfeit. I ran because if I didn’t, all of the ones I loved would cease to exist. This was not an option for me. So, I ran. Ignoring my protesting legs, I raced ahead, the country scenery flying by out of the corner of my eye. I saw the castle lights up ahead, too far. I didn’t think about what would happen if I didn’t make it in time. I had to get there. There wasn’t another choice if we were to survive. My lungs were screaming for air, feeling as though they might burst, but I couldn’t afford to stop and catch my breath. There simply wasn’t enough time. There was never enough time.
The moon, usually beautiful to me, seemed sinister tonight as its gloomy, silver-white glow lit the way to my destination. It rose higher and higher in the sky, almost as if to mock me for not being fast enough to get to the castle in time. I glared up at it, willing it to stop its nightly ascent long enough for me to reach the castle. The hard cobblestone path was wearing on my calves, but I kept going. I was the only one who could stop the impending disaster that seemed to become more inevitable by the minute.
I ran.
Up at the castle, a clock struck midnight.
