"Devan wake up, wake up. The bell rang." I set up in my desk.
"What happened?" He laughed. I rubbed my half closed eyes. "What class are we going to?" He laughed again.
"Devan if you get any more absent minded your ears are going to whistle." I gave him a smug look.
"Oh yes oh mighty Rayne. Rememberer of all. If I didn't have thee I wouldn't know what to do." I smiled and stuck my tongue out as he pulled me out of my desk and onto his back. "So I take it school's over?"
"You would be correct if you did." He took me out to his car and sat me in the front seat and sat our stuff in the back seat. "So where are we going to eat today?"
We pulled into our drive way and I got the food and ran inside. "Stay out here until I get it cooked." He crossed his arms and went to jump on the trampoline. I walked outside about 45 minutes later.
"Good Lord. Took you long enough." He laughed and started walking towards me.
"Fine, so I guess you don't want all of your favorite foods do you?"
"No way! Are you serious? You made steak, mashed potatoes, and...."
"Yes macaroni and cheese." I hadn't seen him smile this big since before his parents died.
"Oh my goodness I LOVE you!" His mouth was very full and his words were slurred. "Okay Mr. five-year-old let's go back to 17." I laughed. "Let's go back inside." I grabbed our plates and walked through the French doors.
"Hey Devan." My door opened and light poured into my room.
"Rayne do you know what time it is?" I paused to look at the clock. "It's 3:00 A.M." He looked a little lost. "What's wrong?"
"Can you tell me what happened to my parents again?" He fidgeted. "I know I have asked you a million times but I just can't remember." I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. I smiled
"It was a beautiful day. March 31st in fact..."
"They died on my birthday?" I started to tear up.
"It had snowed previously in the day but it was swiftly melting away. Cheyenne, your mother, had just recently found out she was pregnant and was starting to show. Jackson, your father, was driving the family to the movies for your birthday. He pulled up to a red light and waited for it to turn green. When it did he turned left and a drink driver going 90 mph..." Tears started pouring from his eyes but he motioned me to go on. "He slammed into the right side of your dad's car with his truck. Your mother was killed instantly. Jackson was thrown out of the window and into the river where both of the vehicles came crashing down. He got pinned into the car and drowned. My dad was on the on the scene as a passing police officer. He had just got off of duty but saw you in the car and ran got out of his car and jumped into the river. He pulled you out and you had to be air lifted to the hospital because you weren't responding and were hypothermic. Not to mention you had a gash on the back of your head..." He felt the back of his head and began to sob. "My dad stayed with you in the hospital till you got out. That's when he brought you to me." I smiled at him. Rayne looked at the clock. It was now 4:30.
"I think I'll go back to bed now." He stood up very shakily and walked out of my room. "Good night."
"Good night Rayne." I smiled. I heard him shut his door and begin to cry. I have heard him cry his self to sleep every night for four years. I had thought about taking him to a therapist, but which one?
