Bryn had a bad feeling. She couldn't explain exactly what the bad feeling was, but she knew for sure that it was...well, bad. She had felt it all morning (along with a greuling headache) since she woke up this morning, when she got to school and all throughout first period. Maybe she was doomed to fail the math test she had third period, or she was gonna get hit by a bus on her way home. She was still trying to figure it out when she spotted her longtime best friend, Deirdre, at her locker.
Deirdre was a petite girl, standing around five feet tall, with moppy red curls that only she was able to pull off, mischievous brown eyes, and skin as clear and white as milk. De was no doubt pretty, she just never seemed to want to believe it. Compared to her, Bryn was more on the cute side, with unruly brown curls that ended just above her elbows that she couldn't tame, a weird button nose that looked like it was just attached to her face like an afterthought and stood a few inches taller than De, making her seem more brutish next to De's delicate frame. Her best friend always said that she was jealous of Bryn's complexion, saying it reminded her of brown sugar, light and sweet. Bryn only laughed, thinking her skin resembled that of the dry desert floor. The only thing Bryn liked about her appearance were her eyes, the hazel color in itself was stunning, and they also reminded her of her Mom. When she was young, her mother had always said that their eyes were two of a kind, hers and her mother's. They were one of a kind now, since her mother had passed away. But that was years ago, and it didn't do her good to dwell on it, especially not now.
Bryn made her way over to De, almost forgetting about her bad feeling, "almost" being the key word, her headache still raging World War III inside her skull.
"Hey De", Bryn uttered. De spun around at the sound of her voice.
"B, what's up?" She greeted back, with a polite smile, but her grin quickly faded as she studied her best friend. "Are you feeling OK? You don't look so well", She asked with hint of concern etched into her tone.
"No, what makes you think that?" Bryn said, her voice laced with sarcasm.
"I just wanted to see if you were OK." De said defensively.
"Yeah, well maybe you could do that without asking one of your stupid questions for once". Bryn bit back.
De frowned, replacing her concern with annoyance. Just then the bell rang, aggravating Bryn's headache even more.
"Gee, if I knew you were going to be this grouchy today, I wouldn't have bothered. Sorry for being your friend." With that, De shut her locker with more force than necessary, ratling Bryn's already aching skull, and started down the hallway towards her next class. Bryn sighed, and followed after her friend.
"De, I'm sorry. You said it yourself, I'm not feeling good today." Bryn apologized once she fell into step beside her.
"Can you forgive me?," she said playfully, batting her eyelashes. When she didn't give, and continued on her way to class, Bryn added a desperate, "Please?", dragging it out until Deirdre finally faced her.
"I'll watch a full episode of Gossip Girl with you, and I won't complain, not even once." Bryn jested.
Bryn could see that she was trying, and failing, to hide a smile. De let out a sigh as her irritation melted away, quickly replaced with an easy grin.
That was what Bryn loved most about De, she could never hold a grudge.
"Alright, I'll accept your apology this time. But don't think that you can use my favorite teen drama to get out of any situation," De said.
"Fine by me. I have always have my 'Sherlock' as my backup. Works every time." Bryn teased.
De's smile widened as the two girls made their way to Chemistry.
