I woke up to find my alarm clock blaring on the nearby nightstand. I slammed down the snooze button and rolled over. I wasn't planning on getting up to do anything. It had been 3 years since I did anything, really. I quit my job the day after Maddie left. I only ever got up for the occasional trip to the grocery store and to go to the bathroom. It sounded like my life was an unraveling mess, but it wasn't. Not that much, anyways. I liked not doing anything, because everything outside reminded me of my sister.
Feeling content, I closed my eyes and waited for sleep to return. However, my slumber was interrupted by a sharp knock on the door. It was weird, because I only ever got company when the landlord came up to lecture me about not paying rent. Leaving the safety of my warm bed, I moped over to the door and opened it. I was surprised to see that nobody was there. Looking down, I discovered a small package on the ground.
Curiously, I picked up the tiny box and went back inside. Sitting down on the couch, I examined the mysterious package, and found it did not have an address, which meant it was not mailed. I slowly peeled away the tape from the cardboard and opened the package hesitantly. Inside were a key and a note.
I know the truth.
My heart dropped to my stomach. Who was the mysterious note writer? And were they talking about Maddie?
Putting the note carefully back in the box, I picked up the key. Attached to the key was a tag that read Billco Industries Storage Inc. I nervously placed the key back in the box and ran to my bedroom to get my laptop. When my laptop turned on, I looked up the company on the key. I found out that the key belonged to a storage unit not far from my apartment. Pulling a sweatshirt over my head and slipping on my boots, I grabbed my car keys along with the contents of the box. I practically bolted down to the lobby and out the door to my car.
Fumbling around with the keys, I unlocked the car door and got in, and proceeded to followed my GPS. I was doing my best to keep calm in the situation, but it wasn't easy. After all, I had just received a note from an anonymous person whom "knew the truth," and I was now potentially driving to my death.
After 20 minutes of speeding through town, I finally reached what looked like an abandoned storage unit facility. Trembling, I parked my car in the remains of a parking lot. I examined the mystery key. The number 807 was embedded into the tag. "Unit 807?" I thought to myself, "Does this mean unit 807?" I cautiously passed storage unit after storage unit, looking for 807. I finally reached the 800s, and unit 807 came into view. Taking a deep breath, I shoved the key into the rusty lock. I turned the key, and the lock came undone. I bent down and grabbed onto the handle, slowly pulling the garage-like door open.
When the inside of the storage unit came into view, my blood ran cold.
