It was my first day of school.
And I was nervous as fuck.
I mean, wouldn't you be nervous if it was your first day of school too? Especially when you had to leave your previous social life to just finish one last year of school. Senior year. Practically torture. Not that I really had a social life back at home.
I gaze out the window of the car, the surroundings flying by as I, at least, try to take my mind off the ever growing knot of nerves in my stomach. I sigh and run a hand through my hair. As usual, my parents weren't able to see me off to school with simple words like Love you! or Have a great day at school! No. They were so caught up with work that they simply gave me shy smiles while they spoke on the phone as the butler ushered me into the car. Yes, a butler. And the CEO of their company was driving me.
Surprisingly, I had no issue with that.
My stomach tightened again as a building cast a shadow upon the rest of the landscape. A large building soared above the horizon. Yep, that was it. My new school.
Woodrow Academy. Best in the region, nonetheless.
I continue to stare in awe at the building, more in fear than admiration when the car door clicks open. A kind face greets me, filling me with temporary relief and joy.
"Chloe," James says, with a soft smile. I step out of the car and took his firm hand. I almost forgot. I was riding in a Lamborghini. I don't mean to brag but...
A Lamborghini.
"Thank you so much, James. You really don't know how much I appreciate you coming with me. You know I really would have driven myself. It's not a huge deal," I say smiling. I really couldn't imagine anyone else driving me to my first day of school. It was perfect.
James waves mer off. "No, really, I would have rather had you be driven by someone else anyways. I don't think your nerves would lead to safe driving."
I roll my eyes. Of course, he would be worrying about my safety. "Right, my nerves would've gotten me in a car crash. I've heard that happens really often, James."
The happiness in his eyes flickers to dark concern for a split second, just long enough for me to catch it. I know what he's thinking. "James...," I start softly, "...You have to trust me now. I'm a senior in high school. I'm going to be taking care of my life for the next few months at this boarding school. You've seen me grow up, practically in your arms. You know I'm capable," I say, putting my hand gently on his arm as I look up at him.
He gazes back down at me with endearment. "Fine, I'll let you go. Just don't go around doing reckless stuff. We know how that affects people, Chloe."
I nod slowly. I've seen what drugs and alcohol do to people when they're used recklessly up close and personal. It's not a pretty sight.
"You know, you've always been like a brother to me, James."
James chuckled and I followed with a small smile. The fact was, I don't know what I would do without James. He's been like a father to me. Taking someone under their wing isn't an easy thing to do, but with James, it was different. There was an instant 'click.'
"Chloe, one last thing...," he began worriedly. "If you ever... You know, need me for anything, just call me and, I'll come right away. Right?"
