ღThe Heart That Won't Heal: Chapter Oneღ

A harsh roll of thunder rumbled in the distance. A sigh escaped my mouth, joining with the rumble of thunder. Seconds later, lightning flashed. The weather is just making this real life nightmare even better, I thought sarcastically in my head.

"Are you feeling nervous about your first day of school?" Aunt Lillian asked, dragging my attention away from the window. Her dark green eyes were set on the road, but I could see the concern in them.

"Nope," I answered, keeping my tone confident. I have always hated seeing other people feel concern for me. No one needs to be concerned about me.

"Alright," her eyes flickered to me for a second, suspicion in them. My aunt remained silent for a moment, before she spoke four words. Four words that made me want to vomit. "Well, here we are."

A huge, white sign proclaimed the school to be Winston E. High School. The building was made of red bricks and had to be at least three stories high. There were endless windows. In front of the school were gardens, beautiful gardens with exotic looking flowers. There were several cheery blossom trees by the entry doors. Behind the school the fields for sports and a track for running sat.

"Bye, Aunt Lillian," I quickly opened the door and escaped from the car. I didn't want my aunt to pelt questions at me. Or invite me to eat lunch with her or something. Sprinkles of rain started to fall from the sky. I made a dash for the main entrance.

Dozens of other students clustered around the doors. Most were chatting, others were trying to impress their friends by being stupid. No one seemed to notice me though. Everyone slowly started shuffling forward around me. Mindlessly I followed them.

Once indoors everyone else clustered in groups with their friends. I was left standing alone; looking for the main office.

I yanked out the map of the school from my pocket. After three frustrating minutes, I found where the office is located. Taking a few turns down long hallways, the main office came into sight.

Inside the office was a cheery yellow color. There was a row of chairs against the wall before a desk. The huge desk appeared to be made of oak, an old lady sat at the desk. Her hair had streaks of gray in it and she was looking through a pile of papers. She glanced up at me as I walked up to the desk.

"You must be Cordelia," the woman stated. "Here is your-" Whatever she was about to say next was cut-off by a loud raucous coming from the doors I just entered.

"This is the first day of school, James!" A loud voice boomed out.

"I already told you-"

"James! No one would dare to do that besides you!"

"I never-"

"Quiet, James. Go sit down in there!"

The command was followed by a groan of anger. Seconds later, a boy came trudging up to the main desk. His whole face was contorted into a scowl. He ran one hand through his brown hair as he fell onto one of the chairs lined up on the wall by the desk.

A flustered looking lady and a red faced man stomped by the main desk and opened a door that lead to a smaller office.

"Well," the lady at the main desk said in a happy tone, as if the whole scene didn't just happen. "This is your schedule."

The lady continued to ramble. My eyes slithered over to the boy... Who was staring at me? He wasn't peeking- he was staring at me with his eyes wide. He definitely had that look described as someone seeing a ghost. When he noticed me looking, he blinked and stared hard at the ground.
