The outbreak had started in the west just where the so called biggest Boyband on the planet happened to be concluding their last tour date (I bet those fans were thankful they didn't spend their money on undead direction). The first news story was a day after that show finished on how a "major virus (nicknamed ZOMBIE for obvious reasons) had struck the Western coast of the USA and precautions were to be taken" the next day you were being told to evacuate to the east as soon as possible. Usually One Direction being some of the most famous people on the planet would have gotten a private jet out of the country the first day anything that may harm them in any way was warned of but every airport had been shut off. Also when everyone heard the news about the apparent "zombie apocalypse" it was hard to believe. Most people didn't move from their homes until on the third day they saw a news reporter get attacked by a disgruntled creature with its jaw hanging loose joined off screen by the sound of gunshots before the screen went blank and everyone was told there were "technical difficulties". In most opinions it probably should've been health difficulties but it did get people to move to safety, the ignorance of humanity at its finest. For some reason (or just for the sake of there being less characters for me to write about) One Direction had left the 5* hotel they were staying in California along with all their crew and security. Probably not the best idea or most realistic but when have fanfics ever been realistic? They had all taken refuge in one room in the hotel unsure of whether or not anyone who looked after them on tour was brain dead and fancied a snack to fill the void. They had stayed here for six nights until they heard a growling noise coming from the other side of the door that seventh morning, that was when they decided it was probably best for them to escape and find a safer place. They all had backpacks which they would normally bring on their flights back home filled with things to entertain them phones, books, magazines etc. Which they managed to fill with "things that probably won't come in useful for the zombie apocalypse but I'll bring anyway" that included phones, books, magazines etc. (maybe including an extra water bottle). On the count of three they barged the door open which managed to knock the zombie to the ground as the 5 boys ran to whichever direction their panic took them while Liam managed to throw an empty champagne bottle at the wriggling body lying on the floor hitting it's left shoulder missing the desired target of the head before running off with his companions. It turned out that the streets were probably safer than in a building where there were food supplies and more chance of fresh human brains to have an all you can eat buffet for the undead. Besides, the part of California the boys were staying had become a ghost town. Probably because most the people who lived there were wealthy and had unfortunates to chauffeur them to whichever place they desired. Most of the residents were probably at a safe place by now. It was when the boys were walking down a street searching for any signs of not rotting life for help or just reassurance that the real world was still there somewhere then three creatures in search for some blood came stumbling round a corner after hearing their victims cry for help. Rule no.1 in the zombie apocalypse - don't attract attention? Isn't that the most obvious thing to do? You even do that in horror movies when the person who's trying to kill you actually has a malfunctioning brain... The boys, having no real weapons backed away slowly until one of the creatures began to walk at a faster pace than usual (I wouldn't say run. Zombies don't run. Unlike in most movies where they may lose their ability to think and their stability to walk but can run the 100 metres in Usain Bolt time). It was then that they started picking up their pace and Niall being Niall (and for the sake of making this story more exciting and dramatic) tripped up over his own feet and having a dodgy knee was finding it difficult to get back up.
"NIALL GET THE FUCK UP NOW" shouted Louis as he watched Niall on the ground in a fluster as the blood covered once-human came closer to him. The boys, in the midst of a crisis all started shouting to make distractions for the other zombies to get away from Niall not thinking of the consequences that came with doing that. It was just as the first zombie was about to pounce on Niall that with a bone cracking crunch the brain-eating bastard was whacked over the head by a frying pan which resulted in it falling to the ground with a thump. A hand was then held out for Niall to grab and get up off the floor but as he looked up, the hand wasn't of who he expected it to be, which was one of the boys, but that of a messy-brown haired girl in a black baggy baseball jersey with a white target shape on it (now spurted with blood and dirt to accompany her arms) with a red plaid shirt tied around her waist. Niall took the hand and was handed a baseball bat by the other hand. He took it gratefully and looked up hesitantly to see if his friends had been deprived of the little brain cells they had left in the case of that situation. The girl had already picked up her weapon and ran to the second zombie and kneed it in the stomach causing it to stumble back as she then proceeded to mimic her actions with the frying pan from her previous kill. It looked like Liam and Louis had somehow managed to get the other zombie on the ground as Harry and Zayn looked on with a 'grossed out' look on their faces.
"Guess I don't need to use this then" Niall said as he stared longingly at the baseball bat and walked over with a slight limp to the rest of his band mates. But before he could get there the girl who had saved him earlier shouted to them
"Follow me. Now"
The boys, after seeing how easy it was for her to take down two zombies with just a frying pan were reluctant to disagreeing. They followed the girl round the corner to the next street where she stopped for a moment scanning up and down the houses before choosing one and walking towards the door. She checked if it was locked, which it was, which made her mutter a swear under her breath and then took a bobby pin out of her back jean pocket. She snapped it in half and then stuck it in the keyhole and started wiggling it about, soon enough the door opened.
"Holy shit you're like a spy"
Admired Louis. The first words that any of them had uttered to their saviour.
"Where did you learn to do that?"
Asked Harry.
"Useless knowledge I keep in my head and will probably never use, in this situation though I'm thankful I learned to do that" she replied.
"Wait you're not American are you? Well you don't sound it" Liam quizzed. It would be nice to find someone to remind them of home. The virus had only hit the west of America so far and hopefully it would stay that way.
"No, from the UK."
She said as she began to look closely around the house they had just broken into.
"Thanks for saving me earlier but sorry I forgot to ask your name". Niall was curious about this stranger and why she seemed to be the only other person in this ghost town minus the zombies. "Uh.. It's Ripley"
"None of you better be bitten or that whole thing was the start of a suicide mission, you don't know who to trust." She quickly changed subject.
"No no no" said Zayn as he waved his hands and shook his head.
"Trust me if one of us was bitten you'd probably know about it by now with the amount of groaning they'd be doing" Louis added as a little smirk grew on his face"
"Sorry we haven't introduced OUR selves" said Liam as he held out a hand to Ripley who was rummaging through a drawer.
"I already know who you are" she said without turning around. Liam awkwardly took his hand back and sat down on the sofa behind him to make it less obvious what he just tried to do and failed. I suppose he agreed with her , you don't know who to trust in a life threatening situation, especially if you have just met them. Even though it had only been a couple weeks he had already heard on the news of people shooting other people for food, weapons or just because they didn't want to help them. And although it had only been a couple weeks, he knew they were going to have stick through this a lot longer than that.
