It was around 5:00am, and 11 year-old May Dawson was in her family's 1964 Chevy Impala, driving down some rainy highway towards Manchester. Just three days ago, May had left her much-beloved home in the states, a country house in the rolling West Virginia hills. She had said many tearful goodbyes to her best friends, Maria Norman and Allie Grayson. But that was in the past. The move had been fast, a plane trip to London Heathrow, the swift buying of a new car, and now the late night, early morning drive to Manchester. May stared gloomily out of the window, her forehead pressed against it, watching each drop of rain as it slithered down the window next to her cold leather chair. The girl had mixed feelings about this move. It was excruciatingly sad to leave her friends, community, and home. But at the same time, she liked the new house. It was completely brick, with moss and ivy creeping up the sides. It had a large observatory, and 100 acres of land surrounding it. The whole thing almost seemed magical. Of course, that was entirely possible, considering that both her mom and her dad were a wizard and witch. That's right. MAGIC. She had mixed feelings about that too. Her parents weren't too in-your-face crazy though. They kept usage of magic to a minimum, only when it was an emergency. Like when she was 4, and choked on a Lego, her dad had whipped out his wand, yelled "Anapneo!" and May was fine. Apparently, part of the reasons for the move was so May could attend the best magic school in the world, Hogwarts. Apparently they had schooled some old British wizard named Harry Potter, who had killed some terrorist-psycho wizard named Voldercorn or something. His kids had gone there too, but they had long since graduated. So that was exciting. May had only ever gone to non-wizard,or muggle, schools before, and her experiences hadn't been great. So she was amazed to be going to a place where she would finally fit in.
Suddenly, May got tired of waiting
