“Rose!” screamed my friend Mandy from outside my window. “Open the goddamn door! It’s colder than a witch’s tit out here!”
I flung the door open to see not only my best friend Mandy, but also her brother Marcel. The Royal Nerd, as I like to call him. He’s always locked away in his room, studying or conducting experiments in the same awful sweater vest and grandpa pants. His glasses have tape around the nose piece—who knows why; he could certainly afford to get them fixed. His hair was probably the worst part. It was always slicked back with way too much gel. I mean, he’s nice enough, I guess. And he has cute dimples. But still, I had to hold back a shudder as I gestured for them to enter my house.
Mandy was the complete opposite of her older brother—gorgeous and popular. She had dark wavy hair and a perfect smile and legions of friends...yet she elected to be my best friend. I never quite understood that. I was the “ugly” friend, and everybody knew it. In fact, that’s probably why Mandy hung around me so much. Well, that and my fantastic personality and sense of humor. Anyway, Mandy walked in and sat on the arm of the couch. Marcel shuffled over to the fireplace.
“Why, hello. How nice of you to drop by so unexpectedly. Why are you here?” I asked tiredly.
“Well, for one, Marcel blew a fuse using his Bunsen burner, and I’m dumb and I don’t know how to fix it and two, we both need dresses for the Winter Ball and three, we have two dateless Winter Ball attendees here, so...”
“Ummm...” I stammered.
Marcel looked down at the floor, flustered.
“Marcel and Rose go to the Winter Ball together,” Mandy said in an announcer voice, outlining an imaginary banner with her hands.
“No?” I said.
“Why not?” Mandy said, making her way to my kitchen.
I gave her a weird face. She stuck her tongue out at me. “I’m making hot chocolate. Want some?”
“Yes, pleaseee,” Marcel called.
“Yah,” I said shortly.
“Okay, so you and Marcel are going to the ball together. All settled.”
“I didn’t say anything that resembled yes.”
“Mandy, if she doesn’t wanna go with me, it’s fine. Why would she?” Marcel said softly.
“Why wouldn’t she? You’re MY brother,” Mandy said.
“Well, okay... I was hoping that Zayn was gonna ask me but--”
“Rose, he’s going with Mandy...” Marcel murmured.
“He’s WHAT?” I hissed.
“Um, I was gonna tell you...” Mandy said.
“Oh my god I hate you so much you fucking hoe you’re so lucky I don’t even care fuck my life nobody likes me and everyone fucking loves you including me and I don’t understand why. FUCK.” I ranted and pounded up the stairs. “YOU BETTER BRING ME MY HOT CHOCOLATE!” I yelled before I slammed my door.
I flopped down on my bed and sighed. I knew he wasn’t going to ask me. Why do emotions exist? You know what, I’m happy for Mandy. She’s going to this dance with the guy I’ve liked for three years, it really doesn’t matter. I will have a wonderful time all alone.
Just then a soft knock came at my door. “If you don’t have hot chocolate, I will chuck you out this window,” I snapped.
“Uh, yeah, I have it.”
