I Don't Miss

"Oh, say can you see," I closed my eyes as I began to sing. "By the dawn's early

light." My palms were moist, so I held a stronger grip on the microphone. I recited the

words to myself plenty of times, but still felt nervous that I would forget. The words fell

out my mouth elegantly; the higher notes were still to come. "And the rockets red

glare!' That was perfect. I had perfected the runs after this and all that was left was the

end note. "Oh say does that star spangled, banner yet wave. O'er the land of the free,"

here we go, "and the home of the brave!"

The crowd cheered and I waved to them, as I exited the field. I was met with

hugs from my parents and vocal instructor. I nailed another great performance, but not

just any performance, I sang the National Anthem at a NFL playoff game.

"Great job, Riley. You remembered to breathe in all the right spots. I'm so proud."

My coach placed his hands on top of his heart.

"Thanks, Mr. Lister."

"Yeah, honey, you did a great job today. " My mom kissed my cheek and I

rushed to rub it off.

"Your mother and I are very proud of you." Dad put his arm around my mom's

waist. I crossed my arms and leaned back on my leg.

"Yeah, and I bet you are glad you got to get Eli Manning's autograph, too."

"Getting this ball is the best thing that has happened to me. You know other

than your mom and you." He walked over and gave me another hug.

"Wow." I shook my head. "Let's get to our seats, the game is about to start!" I

led them to our reserved seats at the top marked 'Reynold's and Company".

We had a great view of the game, the Giants vs the Bengals, but I had little

interest since I'm a Patriots fan. I heard my phone vibrate in my pocket. I saw I had

dozens of messages, but I went to one: Astrid

"Nice outfit!! I love the way you paired the blue heels with the red dress. So

patriotic!" It read.

"Thanks, but how was my singing?" I replied and in under a minute I heard my

phone shudder.

"You know you did great with that little power of yours." She put a wink emoji

after her text.

"I mean, I could sing without it, it just helps with my nerves." My heartbeat sped

up.

"Calm down, I know. That's what I meant. I remember just last year, when you

fainted on stage at the talent show. Now you've signed a deal with Bass Productions

and are already singing at NFL games. I am so proud." She put the crying emoji behind

her last text and I chuckle.

"Yeah, I'm not cheating."

"It depends on what your definition of cheating is. " she replied.
