Once, when I was little, say grade 2, there were two girls who tried to convince me that they were witches. And in order to play with them and be their friends, I had to pretend I was a witch too. Their names were Asia, Julia and Mackenzie.
The first time they tried to convince me they were witches, was in gym class. We were sitting on the stage in the gym because we had gotten 'out' during some game. Asia and Julia were sitting beside each other as I hopped up on the stage. I asked what they were talking about, and they chose to tell me they were witches.
At first, I didn't believe them. I mean, who would?
"You don't believe us, do you Katie?" Julia asked
At that moment, I realized that in order to be friends with these girls, I had to act like I knew what they were taking about.
"Yeah, I believe you." I said in a sort of sarcasm
"Here," Asia said, "I'll prove it." So she waved her hand and even though I saw that nothing in that gym class had changed, I still gasped in awe.
"You saw it? How everyone has underwear on their heads now?" Asia asked.
"Oh yeah! That was so cool! But how do they not notice that they have underwear on their heads?" You have to admit, even though I was only seven, I made a valid point.
"Oh, that's because we made it that way. They don't know if we don't want them to know." Julia explained
"And, non-believers can't see what witches do." Asia added.
Then I nodded my head. I pretended to be something I wasn't just so I could fit in. But at least now I had new friends to play with at recess. Who cares if they don't know I really am? Right?
About a week later, we had been hanging out by the swing-set on the playground. The pea gravel was very cold and gave off a cold-dusty smell. I was holding onto the metal arms of the swings. Mackenzie was swinging and Asia was talking to her. I joined into the conversation and for some reason I told them I was hungry.
Mackenzie then stopped swinging, "You are a witch, why don't you make some food?" she asked.
"Oh," I said.
"Here," Mackenzie jumped off the swing, snapped her fingers and handed me air. "Its a cheeseburger." She told me.
I took the air from her and held it like it was a burger. I took a bite of it and puffed out my cheeks to make it seem like I was chewing. I felt very awkward and uncomfortable doing this, especially with Mackenzie and Asia watching me.
"You can't see it, can you?" Asia asked
I looked down at the air in my hands, "Of course I can see it," I said quietly "I'm just not hungry anymore." So I dropped the burger and leaned against the metal swing pole.
A little bit later, the bell rang. Signaling the end of recess, and the end of me pretending to be a witch.
