hoseok leant against the counter, letting his eyes fall shut. he hadn't gotten any sleep the night before due to tests he had to take that day. his whole body felt heavy with exhaustion, and he slumped against the counter like a rag doll.
the bell above the door chimed just as hoseok began to dream, and he cracked one eye open bitterly. a blonde boy walked in, a bright look in his eyes and his sweater falling off one shoulder. hoseok watched him meander around the store, flipping his sleeves around his hands cutely.
the boy saw something that amused him and let out a small giggle, and the sound made hoseok's heart thump in his chest. the boy grinned widely, showing off all his teeth, and hoseok noticed what he was looking at. the boy was staring down at the rabbit cage, and he had one hand pressed against the glass. a rabbit had it's nose pressed against the glass also, and the boy looked giddy at this fact.
"do you want to play with him?" hoseok asked, pushing himself away from the counter. the boy looked up, his eyes wide as if he hadn't expected anyone to be there. the boy's hand fell away from the glass and he pulled it up into his sleeve. the boy fiddles with the hem of his sweater with sleeve covered hands, and hoseok had to resist the urge to coo at him.
"do you really think you could do that for me?" the boy asked quietly. hoseok could see the excitement brewing in the boy's eyes, and he nodded.
"of course, do you want to see the white one?" hoseok jumped over the counter and walked over to the rabbit cage. the boy scooted away from hoseok as he approached, but nodded anyway. hoseok reached into the cage and picked up the fluffy white rabbit, and he could hear the boy squealing under his breath.
hoseok handed the rabbit over to the boy, who gently took it in his hands, as if he was afraid he would smash it between his palms. hoseok watched as the boy played with the rabbit's ears and whispered to it under his breath.
"i'm getting diabetes jesus christ," hoseok muttered, not being able to hold back when the boy scrunched up his nose at the rabbit and said now i look like you! and giggled cutely.
"sorry, what was that?" the boy asked. hoseok looked over to see the boy staring at him, and hoseok blushed slightly.
"oh, nothing. i didn't say anything." hoseok said. the boy nodded and continued to play with rabbit, up until it bit him on the finger.
"ow, ow, ow, ow!" the boy yelled, pulling his hand away from the rabbit. hoseok quickly grabbed it and put it back in the cage before looking over hand to boy, who was sucking on his finger.
"don't do that, you'll get sick. come with me." hoseok said, nodding towards the counter. he jumped back over it and crouched down to wear his coworker kept the first aid kit. he set it on the counter and pulled out alcohol wipes and a band aid. "my friend namjoon is always hurting himself, so we have to keep a first aid kit behind the desk."
the boy giggled at that, and hoseok smiled at him. he held out his hand and the boy stretched out his fingers, showing him where the rabbit had bitten him. hoseok cleaned it quickly, and the boy flinched at the pain of the alcohol on his cut.
"sorry," hoseok said quietly.
"it's fine." the boy watched as hoseok fished through the box of band aids, trying to finger one small enough for the boy's finger. finally he pulled one out, but it had spongebob print on it.
"is this okay? we probably have some plain ones in here," hoseok went to dump out the band aid box but the boy stopped him by putting his hand over hoseok's.
"i love spongebob." the boy said, pulling the bandaid away from hoseok. he wrapped it around his finger, smiling happily after he was done. "thank you."
"it was no problem, sorry the rabbit bit you. he's the youngest, he's still kind of feisty." taehyung laughed and hoseok felt the need to record it and make it his new ringtone. hoseok shook his head and looked back up at the boy, who was staring at him.
suddenly the boy shoved his hand out, almost hitting hoseok is the chest with the tips of his fingers. "i'm taehyung, by the way."
hoseok laughed and shook taehyung's hand. "i'm hoseok, nice to meet you."
taehyung left the pet shop abruptly after that, afraid he'd embarrass himself further in front of the cute worker. risk of embarrassment, however, did not keep taehyung from showing up every friday when he knew the boy worked, and blaming their meetings on coincidence.
hoseok would patiently wait for friday to roll around so he could see the cute boy, who still wore the spongebob bandaid even though hoseok was sure the small bite would have healed by then.
the two boys only got together after a boy named jungkook had bought taehyung's rabbit, and the younger boy claimed he needed something else to cuddle — to which hoseok had happily offered himself.
