I sit up in my bed reading the old crinkled note that had become an every day habit. The note had yellowed over time and now looked like an ancient document. It was a page in my moms journal from when she was a young adult.

Dear Journal,
I met this amazing boy today, he's so kind and generous. I think it's love at first sight, or maybe I'm going insane. But, I guess even the most sane people need to go a little crazy sometimes. And guess what? he's in almost all of my college classes! He's very handsome too. His name is David.

I read that note so many times that I could read it backwards and forwards. My dad had it saved in a box somewhere and he probably didn't even know I have it stashed in my room. I slid the delicate note into the hidden compartment in my dresser and I pulled out my book. Loud footsteps clomped up the stairs and I knew it was my dad immediately. I braced myself for some loud argument, but my dad didn't my dad swing open my door and start yelling. Instead, he peeked open the door as if still deciding if he should come in or not.
"Why, Hannah?" He asked, even though we both knew the answer. "Why would you do this? It's Christmas Eve and I wanted a nice diner with our family." He added.
"They're not my family." I muttered. His face twisted in to a face filled with sorrow, the same face I saw everyday after my mom's death. I wish I could've taken the words back, I wish I could have sucked them right back into my mouth. But, there is no going back, so the words just hung there, out in the open silence. My dad looked out my window at the purple pinkish sky and closed his eyes. He reached for my hand and I didn't dare pull away. It felt like hours passed by until he spoke again.
"I'm sorry, Hannah." His ocean blue eyes poured into mine. "I truly am."
