A ringing of sirens was the sound I woke up to this morning, as I always did, those annoying damn sirens that I would beat with a bat if given the chance.
But I'm never given the chance.
I roll off my bed and onto the floor, which isn't that hard considering my bed is already on the floor, so there isn't a drop. But I don't think you can call it a bed the thing I just rolled off of, it's two blankets and a pillow on the dirt floor, but it's something to sleep on at night so I guess I shouldn't complain. Yet I am going to complain anyway. I lay on floor for a little longer before I decide I should probably get up and get dressed. I stand up and look for my clothes which is in a pile in the corner: grey t-shirt, black pants, undergarments, and a pair of black shoes with an orange swoosh on it which looks quite out of place. As I'm getting dress I spot myself in the mirror, my brown hair is a mess and my green eyes look like they could use a bit more rest. Whatever it's not like anyone is going to notice anyways.
Once I finished getting dressed I go outside and find that it was pretty warm outside, and that my legs are already starting to sweat underneath my pants.
Great sweat stains, that's exactly what I need.
I look to see all of the other huts that line the dirt road besides my one roomed shed which I'm pretty sure use to be a bathroom of some sort. I kick a pebble that was laying on the side of the road and it ends up hitting the side of hut that's next door. I'm greeted with an angry old man that probably looked better in his younger days, he yells a few choice words at me about how I could damage his prize hut but I pay no mind to him, his hut is about as shitty as the rest of them.
I walk down the dirt road, past all of the huts to the center of our town where pretty much everyone is gathered, and at this point I'm standing on the outside of the circle where everyone is gathered, so I'm right next to the sirens that are still going off to let everyone know to come gather at the center of town. Which I don't understand why we even need anymore because we come here every morning.
I really wish I had a bat.
Finally the siren stop, and like clockwork a video appears es on screen where we're greeted with the sight of our country's leader. Mindy Evans. Or leader Evans, whatever.
"Hello citizens of Crava, I congratulate you on another day of survival, and another day to serve Crava as each citizen should..."
I tune her voice out since I've seen this video everyday of my life, I always seen her in her blue shirt and a pearl necklace on, we only see her from the chest up so I always wonder what she wears with her shirt. Her hair is curly and black as night, and rests on her shoulders. Her eyes are brown and cold, they look like she's never seen kindness in any form, and to top it all off she has blood red lipstick which I wouldn't be surprised if it's actually made from blood.
I stand there and watch her mouth form the words that I've heard so many times that I could stand up and recite them myself if I had to. She talks about the war that's on going and how it's finally coming to an end.
As if.
The war going on is no where to being finished, the older people of Crava talk about life before the war and how this would be considered World War III if we still named our wars after something. But I understand how this could be called a world war, this war literally spilt the world apart. The world lays in ruins, most of the technology gone, barely any water or heating. Crava is one of the two countries that are left on Earth. We're told the war started with a powerful missile that blew up everything and mostly everyone.
There are people here that speak of a time when there was 7 billion people in this world.
Crazy.
Now there is barely half of a million in Crava, and I have no idea what the fuck is going on in Edon and nor do I care, they can burn in hell for all I care. They've killed most of the people in my country, including my parents.
Oh, and that they've been making my life hell.
