5. His Quick Feet

He didn’t come after me right away so I pumped my legs to take me into the woods that surrounded his backyard. I tried my best to keep up my pace without tripping over tree roots or hidden rocks. But, I ended up stumbling and tripping, scraping my legs a couple of times. I kept looking behind me but I kept seeing nothing which terrified me.

Isn’t he the type of guy to chase right after the girl? He seemed pretty fit when I saw him shirtless but every time I looked back I saw nothing. I pushed myself even harder to pick up my pace and it was at the point where my face was stinging from the wind nipping at it. I looked back one more time to be sure and I was almost positive I saw a flash of a white sneaker.

Panic rose up inside my chest and I pumped my legs to go faster but this forest was so dense that loose branches hung everywhere and roots popped up out of the ground. I kept tripping and my pace started to slow down. I cried out in pain as I tripped over a particularly large root and felt my ankle snap. I fell to my knees and desperately tried to find the right leg to examine the damage. My ankle was twisted in the most disturbing way and just looking at it made me sick to my stomach.

I bit back a scream and used all my upper arm strength I could muster to push myself off the ground. When I was finally off the ground, I took off in a run again, my ankle pulsating in a fresh pain that was unbearable and indescribable. I had to bite my lip to keep myself from screaming and to will myself to keep going.

I broke out of the woods into open space. I glanced around in a panic and finally noticed a road in front of me. I looked down the road and saw a town looming in the distance. I looked down at my ankle that was in so much pain I couldn’t even feel it anymore. I took a deep breath and took off towards the town that was standing like a scene in a movie, filled with promise and new fears sadly. In a short two minutes, I was standing on the very edge of the small town just staring at it.

Then the very thought I tried to avoid crept into my mind, ‘was Liam following me?’ I snapped my head around and saw a figure running down the street at lightning speed. The same figure that I watched lurk in the shadows when I was tied up and terrified. My breathing quickened and I took off in a run again, this one more off balance causing me to stumble more than I would have liked.

He was gaining on me way too quickly and I was running out of time. I looked around me and I saw a rundown pharmacy and I contemplated going inside but where was I going to go after that? Without thinking, I rushed down the side of the building into an alley way. This one wasn’t dark and damp with overflowing trashcans and murderers in the shadows. This one was filled with light and the ground covered in crunchy gravel.

I listened to my feet crunch on the ground as I sped down the alley not knowing what to expect, just trying to get away. I screeched to a halt when I saw a chain-link fence blocking my escape. What the hell was I going to do now?! I could both climb it and jump over it, putting myself back in the woods or stay there until he found me. Climb the fence it is. I hooked my feet in the tiny holes and climbed up the side imagining myself climbing the rock wall in my school gym rather than escaping a possible murderer.

I’m two more strides from the top when I feel a hand grab shirt from the back. I grasp onto the rusted metal for dear life. I snap my head around and see a livid Liam. Oh god, he was really going to kill me this time. I turn my face around and use all my strength to hold on but he was using all his strength to pull me down. I could feel the metal cutting into my fingers but I was not for the life of me going to let go.

“If you thought you had a chance, your definitely wrong now.” I froze. His words had so much truth laced through them; I knew I was as good as dead. I turned my head around to look at him and he was smiling cynically. I watched as he pulled his leg back and I was half hoping he was going to jump down but he brought his leg back with full force, knocking my bad ankle out from under me.

I cried out in pain, tears filling my eyes. He was winning and there was no chance of me escaping this. He brought his leg back again and before he could break my other ankle, I let go of the fence and let myself drop to the ground below. On the way down, it was like all sound was mute; almost like a scene in a movie. The fence had to be about ten feet up and even though in  the back of my mind, I stubbornly thought it wouldn’t hurt that much, I felt the breath leave my body in an instant and I felt a terrible crack rip through my back.

As much as I just wanted to lie there to die or pass out, I had to get up. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath, pushing myself up off the ground again like I had before. I felt a fresh new pain rip through my body but an even worse thing happened. His face appeared in front of me and he might as well have been the devil.

We looked at each other for a second before I saw his forearm coil back and I knew what was coming before it happened. I half hoped it would end all of this but I knew it wouldn’t. He turned his arm to the side and elbowed me right in the side of my head. The world really did go silent then; my eyes drooped closed and I felt the falling sensation as I slammed into the ground. I could smell the grimy dirt and sweat before I truly blacked out, darkness sweeping over me like a film.
