Have you ever had a moment in your life that you so wish you could change? I've had too many to count. But...the biggest one is definitely from the first day it happened. The first day they came.
It was definitely a shock. Nothing ever happened in our little town, Shadow Creek. Nothing of any significance ever happens. Every day, it's the same routine. I try to add some spice to my life though. I was only seventeen. I didn't have a care in the world. That is, unless you count my sister. Her name is Heather. She has curly, chocolate hair. Her skin is pale compared to most, and she has lovely green eyes. She's a carbon copy of me.
That's just when it comes down to looks, though. In terms of personalities, we couldn't be anymore closer to exact opposites. But, that's what I used to think. Now...now I know we aren't so different. How did I find this out? Well, since you've listened this far, I guess you really do want to know so, alright. I'll tell you.
I found out the same day they came.
Who are "they" you must be asking?
Simple. "They" are what we call the Raised. You may refer to them as zombies, walkers, lurkers...whatever the hell you want. Either way, those things ruin lives.
They don't care about the things people do. The Raised don't care if you're black, white, crippled or gay. They don't care if you're rich or poor, if you have a job or if you're homeless. They don't care how high your status is in society. The only things those...demons...care about are capturing you and dining on your flesh, blood and internal organs.
They chase you, they eat you and they leave you there to die. I wouldn't wish it upon my worst enemy. If you'd seen the things I've seen...if you'd experienced the same situations I've lived through... you wouldn't want to either.
I still remember the day I first found out about them.

"Evelyne, wake up." Heather's soft voice whispered in my ear. I stirred from my rest but didn't open my eyes. I sighed, feeling the urge to get up and stretch.
"Evelyne's not here... you can leave a message if you'd like." I responded in the same soft manner.
"Please, stop. I made chocolate chip pancakes and I wouldn't want them to go to waste."
She hadn't even finished her sentence before I was up and out of bed. I loved those pancakes to death, and would literally kill for them. They were the east and I, was their west.
I hurried downstairs and into the kitchen. I knelt onto the floor, nearly crying at the sight in front of me. Not only had my dear sister prepared chocolate chip pancakes, but she had also made a whole plate of bacon and coffee. She even added cream and sugar, just the way I loved it.
A piece of paper was sticking out under the plate. I reached out and grabbed it. It was folded into an origami bunny. I chuckled at Heather's artistic expression and unfolded the bunny. On the paper, the words "Happy Birthday, Twinnie" were written on it. I smiled and sat down at the table. As much as I wanted to start eating without her, as usual, today was our birthday and I decided to be polite just this once.
She came down the stairs, a smile still evident on her face.
"Do you like your gift? I spent the last hour working on it."
"Love it?"
She looked at me with a strange expression on her face.
"You've been crying, have you not? Do you not like your gift?"
"No, I'm fine...it's just...I'm scared this is a dream and...I don't want to wake up."
She laughed at my reaction to breakfast and sat down across from me. I suddenly remembered that I had a gift for her as well.
