What hides among us.

   "Your weird." He bites his bottom lip then leans in. I realize he's leaning in to kiss me. I panic and run into my house. I slam the door behind me. I lean on the door. I put my pointer and middle finger on my lips.

I look up to see my parents standing in the hallway. "What's wrong hunny?" My mother asks.
   "Nothing!" I shout then run past them up the stairs.
   "Don't you want to tell us about your day at school?!" She yells up the stairs.
   "Later!" I yell back. I slam my door and pace the floor for about twenty minutes then throw myself onto my bed. "ugh!" I sigh loudly. " I don't know what to do!" I yell into my bed. My mother comes up and knocks on my door.
   "Fern. What's wrong?" She says softly but loud enough for me to hear.
I sit up. "Nothing! I'm fine!" She walks into my room closing the door behind her.
   "Fern... I'm your mother. I know when your upset." She sits on the edge of my bed. "Tell me what's wrong." I sigh.
   "A guy tried to kiss me."
   "A guy? Who?" She cocks her head to the side.
   "His names Aki."
   "Aki!?" She says in shock. I nod.
   "You know him?" She nods back.
   "You guys where good friends, before the whole thing.. Where we had to hide you away." I sit up more and sit beside her.
   "What happened?" She put her arms around me.
   "There was a time where your father was in an argument with a business man. This was before me and your father where married. They put there differences aside after we got engaged. But then when you were in fifth grade they started up again. The man said he was going to kill you so that you couldn't take over for your father.---- "
   "What does father do? Why would he want to kill me!?" I interrupt her
   " your father is...the king of the inhuman creatures, and your the prince. " she looks at me with tears in her eyes.
   "What do you mean inhuman!? " I shout standing up. My dad runs up the stairs and bursts through the door.  
   "What's going on!?"
   "Dear, it's fine. We're talking." She stands up. "It's fine."
   "Ok." He settles down. " what are you talking about?"
   "I was just getting to what we are." She says calmly.
   " which is?" I ask
   "Well you, your father and I are manticores." She replies quickly.
I look at her, confused. "What? Like mythology creatures?!"
She nods her head. " exactly!" She smiles.
" I'm done. Get out." I point to the door. They just stand there and look at me funny. "Well, go on. Get out!"
They look at each other then walk out.
I lay back on my bed. "It's proven. They have gone totally crazy." I mutter to myself as I start dozing off.

I wake up the next morning. I walk down stairs.
" morning Hun!" I turn and see my mum sitting at the dining table.
" hey mum. Good morning. What are you doing home this morning?"
   "Thought I would take this morning off to send you off to school. You seemed really upset yesterday." She looks at me with concern.
"Thanks mum." I smile. I put two pieces of bread into the toaster. I run up stairs and get ready. By the time I get back downstairs my mum had put the spread on my toast. She was no where to be seen though. I eat my toast. After I'm done I brush my teeth. When I go back down the stairs my mum is standing at the foot of the stairs. She hands me a paper bag.
   "Here. I made you lunch." She smiles.
   " thanks" I take it and grab my back pack. My mum holds the side of my face and kisses the other side.
   " I love you, you know that right?"
   "Of course I do!" I smile. She nods.
   "Ok." She walks into the kitchen. I open the front door. "Bye! Have a good day!" These words bring tears into my eyes.
"Bye!" I run out the door and down the street.

I open the school doors. I walk to my locker and put my stuff in there. I remember Aki. I sneak around to the back hallways. No one really walks down these halls anymore. I learned of them from Shiloh. The sneak.

There's one lonely classroom, abandoned, left to the dust. Curious I open the door. The door shrieks, like a cry for help. I walk in shooing the dust from my face. At last I sneeze. After whipping my nose with a handkerchief from my pocket. I look up to find a dust covered piano. There's books all around it; on the floor and on shelves.

I hear someone walking up the hall. I run out of the classroom, closing the door behind me. I walk a bit then turn my head as they turn the corner. It's Aki.

"I found you!" He laughs then runs up beside me. " how you been?" He smiles.
"Ok." I shrug, trying not to make eye contact.
He looks at me. " you doing ok? You look like shit."
"Thanks." I walk up ahead a bit.
"What's wrong?" He runs up.
"Nothing! Now get out of my face about it!" I run away from him.

I stop by the lunch room. "Im so dramatic." I sigh.

~~~ the day goes through ~~~

I got to my locker and start putting my things into my backpack. A hand slams against the neighboring locker. I jump and turn around. Aki is standing right in front of me with his hand on the locker. He looks mad.
"H-hey" my voice cracks.
"Hey." He responds back.
"Wh-wha.." He cuts me off. His hand on my cheek. His lips on mine. My eyes wide open with confusion.
He rests his forehead on mine. "Sorry. I had to. I love you, Fern."
I think I blacked out or something because next thing I knew I was running home. I open the front door and run up to my room.
