Twenty minutes later, the three of them Were standing next to a desk, waiting for Mycroft's secretary to let them in. Sherlock and Kat had been conversing quietly the entire cab ride, and had only stopped once they had entered the lobby of the building (and this was only because of the no speaking rule). Now that they were out of the lobby, they were at it again, leaving John looking quiet lost, but at the same time entertained by their numerous stories. The two were interrupted as the secretary came back and told them that they were free to enter. Upon hearing that, Sherlock began grumbling under his breath until a smiling Kat elbowed him in the stomach.
3rd person Pov
After his secretary had told him that his brother was here to see him, Mycroft had rubbed his temples in annoyance, and (against his better judgment) told her to let him in. Upon hearing the door open once again, his eyes narrowed in annoyance.
"Little brother, you know that I am busy, could this not wait until our mandatory Christmas dinner?" He could practically feel Sherlocks eyes rolling from where he stood with his back to him.
His brothers reply came back curt and annoyed "Well, as much as I adore your magnificent personality, it was not my choice to come and visit."
Mycroft's annoyance spiked as he heard that, and he replied in a similar fashion saying, "Sherlock, I do not have time for one of your petty cases, whatever it is, I am far too busy to be bothered with it."
"Wow Mycie, one would have thought that you would had missed me, seeing as I've been completely off the grid for the past three years."
Mycroft froze as he heard the voice and he slowly turned around to see Katherine Void in all her glory, smirking at him with her hands on her hips. He stared at her for a moment, mouth opening and closing like a fish, before he finally came to his senses and started forward to greet her. Kat laughed at his face before pulling him into a hug; something John would have never in a million years, expected from Mycroft. After pulling back, Mycroft ushered her into a seat (pointedly ignoring Sherlock) and began rapidly asking questions.
"Where were you?"
"Here there and everywhere. Mostly Eastern Europe, and ironically, Russia."
"When did you get back?"
"Hmm, about three hours ago."
Sherlock cut in and with raised eyebrows asked, "Three hours? Why didn't you come straight away?"
Kat stared at him for a moment before unabashedly answering, "I wanted a croissant."
John raised his eyebrows at her. "It took you three hours to eat a croissant?"
She shrugged, "It was a really good croissant. I needed to cherish it. Who knows when I'll get another croissant like that again!"
Mycroft chuckled slightly before dryly saying, "Well, it seems as if you haven't changed much in the two years since we've had any communication with you."
Kat looked affronted as she indignantly replied, "I sent Christmas and birthday cards!" She spun a piece of hair around her finger as she added, "Besides, It would have been dangerous to speak to you. I still can't say anything about what I was doing out there, no matter how much of the British government you control Mycroft."
Mycroft frowned, but accepted the answer, saying, "Well, at least let me use my power as the 'British government' (he shot a dry look towards Sherlock and John) to book you a nice hotel until you can find a house to live in."
Kat smiled but put a hand on his arm, stopping him from dialing the numbers. "That's very kind Mycroft," she said warmly, "But I think that I'm going to reside with Sherlock for the time being, seeing as he should probably get a flatmate before he accidentally blows up Baker Street."
He sighed, but put the phone back on the table, knowing that although this was a disaster waiting to happen, he would never win an argument against her. He gazed at his brother and surrogate sister for a moment before running his hand tiredly over his head. "Just please, please, don't cause too much trouble with your silly antics. I would rather not be dragged into them again."
Kat smirked mischievously at him as she chided, "Oh come on Mycroft, we all know that you secretly love them just as much as we do."
He rolled his eyes and calmly retaliated, "Well, you need a responsible adult to keep you out of jail, and anybody else would just leave you there. Tempting as it would be, mother would have my head if I let anything happen to you young ones."
Kat playfully slapped his shoulder saying, "you're older by two months, get over it" She cast a look towards Sherlock meeting his half amused half annoyed gaze before turning back to his brother and hugging him once again, saying, " We should get going Mycroft, but I promise that I will have tea with you sometime in the next few days, that way we can catch up on all of the things that I've missed."
Mycroft barely had time to give his affirmations before Kat was pulled out of the room along with John, by his eccentric brother who was ranting about a case. He passively gazed out the window of his office. No matter how childish and ignorant his surrogate sister could act at times, deep down he knew that she was like his brother; an adrenaline junkie, but with a death wish the size of Alaska. But he also knew that she was a time bomb, cracked with only a temporary seal. He just hoped that whatever had caused that seal to break last time wouldn't happen again, because although he still didn't know what happened, he did know that it had almost destroyed her. He banished the thoughts from his mind as he saw her, Sherlock, and John, slide into a cab and speed off. He smiled slightly. His family was filled with secrets, lies, broken promises, and had many holes that he doubted would ever be fixed, but he appreciated it all the same. After all, Holmes stuck together, no matter what.
