Down the Staircase

We used to sit upon the clouds

Up there we sat so high

Upon the world we would look down

And bask in the sun's warming light

From the sky we could see the snow

And watch the autumn leaves fall

There we saw the spring blossoms grow

While we lied beneath the sun so tall

Atop the clouds we could see everything

Atop the clouds we could see all

Sometimes you ventured higher

But you always came back to me

You never suggested I try it

And I often wondered what you could see

You were captivated by the view

But I always stayed behind

And though I'd been missing you,

You never saw this through my eyes

One day you looked at me disgracefully

But you weren't looking when I cried

You'd leave me to sit upon clouds higher

Than I could ever reach

Your view was so much wider

Than the ones I would ever see

I called to you to come back again

But up there you would stay

You looked down upon me and then

Your eyes spoke what you'd never say

Down the staircase you'd send me

And so down the staircase I'd go

Once or twice you stepped back down

And I savored the moments then

You never smiled, but always frowned

And soon you stepped higher again

When I spoke I was ignored

And from your life I began to fade

So I reached my hand for yours

And asked if you could stay

You looked at the staircase below

So down the staircase you sent me away

You never stepped down or saw me

And when you did it was just a glance

And when our eyes would meet

You only ever smiled by chance

When you decided to speak

Your words were cold as stone

Down the staircase you sent me

To feel the pain you'd never know

Down the staircase you'd send me

So down the staircase I'd go
