Chapter Three
The cab took them to a Brownstone in Manhattan. Maryn knew right away this wasn’t going to be her kind of party. It was probably a bunch of rich snobs sipping champagne and acting like they own the world. She groaned.
“Oh come on Mare, you might like it,” Tessa said, nudging her out of the cab.
“Yeah sure,” she replied doubtfully.
They got out and split the fare and stood on the sidewalk staring up at the townhouse. A few people came down the sidewalk and went into the townhouse. Maryn decided they didn’t look too bad, almost normal actually.
They mounted the steps and Tessa opened the door.
“Hey aren’t you going to knock,” Maryn asked, grabbing Tessa’s arm.
“No silly, we just walk in. You’d think you’ve never been to a party.” Her eyebrows arched up into her bangs.
“Whatever,” Maryn said, pushing her playfully towards the door again.
They walked into the foyer which was packed with people. Maryn noticed most were students like themselves, but there was the odd person who was older. Maryn shrugged. It didn’t matter to her. They made their way down the hall to the living room. Maryn noticed the rich furnishing’s that were littered with drunken people. The walls were adorned with all kinds of art work and Maryn gazed with fascination.
“Let’s find the kitchen so we can get a drink,” Tessa said, grabbing her by the hand.
Maryn let Tessa lead her back down the hall way to the back of the townhouse where the kitchen was located. There they found a really hot guy positioned behind the island serving drinks. Tessa dragged Maryn over to it.
“What will it be ladies,” he said smoothly, looking them up and down.
“I’ll have a vodka on the rocks. What do you want Mare?” Tessa asked.
“I think I’ll have a rum and coke,” Maryn replied.
The guy flashed them a bright smile and mixed the drinks. He handed them over with a wink.
“There you are ladies.”
Tessa slipped him a tip, which just happened to be her tongue rammed down the guy’s throat, which he didn’t seem to mind in the least. Once Tessa had pulled out of the lip lock they made their way back to the living room, standing off to the side surveying the people around them. Maryn knew that Tessa was looking for someone she would take home later after she had a couple more drinks and who knows what else. Maryn never tried to keep track of Tessa at a party. It was useless.
Music pumped out of a high tech looking stereo system set up in the corner of the living room and people were grinding their bodies together in time to the beat. A smoky haze wafted through the room and Maryn knew right away it wasn’t just cigarettes that people were smoking. Maryn wasn’t the type to do drug’s but she didn’t judge people who did, it was their own lives to do with what they wished.
A guy slithered up to Tessa and started to whisper in her ear. She giggled and then walked away with him. She glanced back at Maryn with a wave and a big smile. Maryn smiled back, she was used to Tessa leaving her at parties, she just didn’t think it would be so soon.
Maryn looked around the party, realizing Tessa was the only person she knew. She hoped maybe she would have seen some people from school, but that didn’t seem likely. Pushing off the wall she made her way around the bodies on the make shift dance floor and back towards the kitchen. She passed the bartender who winked at her and she flashed him a smile.
