Heart-to-zombie

Vera

The doors to the renders opened. The place looked deserted. Everything that I’ve seen so far looked deserted. Looking to my left I saw iris warm brown eyes trained on something, probably waiting for a zombie to pop out. We made our way to the packed and canned food isles. I could and would not eat the garbage that Harrison picked out at the convenience store. He would probably get fat and end up being the first one that died.  I sound bitter. But im not! Im grateful iris saved me. But I don’t really know what im living for.

As if she was reading my mind she said, “Look, Vera none of us really know where were going, okay? We’re taking it one zombie kill at a time” a small smile formed on her lips.

“I guess, I just, I don’t know where we were going. And that bothers me. Are we just going to drive around and wait for nothing?” my voice cracked towards the end, because that’s what I was so afraid of.

“No. there has to be someone out there. We can’t be the only lone survivors” iris spoke these words trying to make me feel better

“Uh,” iris said looking down at her ripped dress. The silk material looked really expensive.

“How much money was your dress?” I asked already knowing it was a lot more than my dress.

“200?” iris said it like a question, a blush covering her cheeks.

“What? How could you spend so much on one dress?” I asked not believing her.

“Im only a sophomore! Im was excited to go to senior prom” iris said defending herself. I then remembered that iris was only 16. But she seemed so much more mature than even some of the kids in my year. A groan erupted from down the aisle.

“Looks like we have company” iris whispered taking a protective stance ready for whatever was going to come out around the corner.

It was worse than I thought it would be. The zombie was big. Big and fat, the zombie was not newly turned; dry blood and crust covered his face. He let out a groan and paddled his way towards us, for a guy his size he was pretty fast. Hearing more paddling feet I turned around quickly to see another zombie, this time a girl. She was almost as big as the guy. She however looked like a newly turned, her skin still had some color and she still had her hair, it was thin a cut up, but still there. This was going to be trouble.

Feeling a back pressed against mine, I knew this was the moment. One of my first big moments during the zombie apocalypse. The moment I had to prove.

Bullets were fired I aimed at her but missed. She was starting to close in on me. Blood pounded in my ears, my heart raced. Swallowing, I stilled my shaking hands and aimed. Not for her throat face or neck. No, I aimed for her legs. My aim was little off but I managed to hit her in the knee. Not expecting that she falls face first onto the floor. Laughter bubbled in my chest, but I didn’t let it show. Running over to her, my feet thundered across the floor. Stopping in front of her my heart slammed against my ribcage. I shot her twice in the back of the head.

Feeling a hand on my shoulder I turned lighting fast, and pointed my gun, right in iris face. Breathing out a sigh, a lowered my gun to my side.

“c’mon! Let’s go!” iris said grabbing the hand that didn’t have the gun. We made it our dropped food pile. Some of the boxes had dents as did one can.

Once we got to where the others were waiting Taven came up to us and immediately said

“What the heck happened!?” Taven said, his face showed confusion. Except Taven only had eyes for iris. I took that time to actually look at Taven his skin was a nice milk chocolate color. His eyes held goofiness and humor. They were deep dark brown; his hair was like the usual black male hair type.

“Zombies. Only 2 of them though “she added the last part when Taven eyes got big.

“c’mon, we got to get the hell out this place” Harrison called as he got into the back of the truck Quade on his trail

“Want to switch?” iris voice rang through the quiet ness of our surroundings

“Switch what?’ Taven asked her, she seemed to get his full 100% attention just by saying something.

“I’ll drive” she gave him a sweet smile and jumped into the driver’s seat, as Taven who was shaking his head and  smiling to himself as he jumped into the passenger side. Deciding that I had to get into the back with the idiots I decided that those two deserved to be happy.
