Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a group of behavioural symptoms that include inattentiveness, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

Common symptoms of ADHD include:

A short attention span or being easily distracted
Restlessness, constant fidgeting or overactivity
Being impulsive

A person with ADHD may have some or all of the following symptoms:

Difficulty paying attention to details and a tendency to make careless mistakes in school or other activities; producing work that is often messy and careless

Easily distracted by irrelevant stimuli and frequently interrupting ongoing tasks to attend to trivial noises or events that are usually ignored by others
Inability to sustain attention on tasks or activities
Difficulty finishing schoolwork or paperwork or performing tasks that require concentration
Frequent shifts from one uncompleted activity to another
Procrastination
Disorganised work habits
Forgetfulness in daily activities (for example, missing appointments, forgetting to bring lunch)
Failure to complete tasks such as homework or housework
Frequent shifts in conversation, not listening to others, not keeping one's mind on conversations, and not following details or rules of activities in social situations
Fidgeting, squirming when seated
Getting up frequently to walk/run around or climb excessively when it's inappropriate (in teens this may appear as restlessness)
Having difficulty playing quietly or engaging in quiet leisure activities
Always being on the go
Often talking excessively

It is one of the most common childhood disorders and it can continue through adolescence and into adulthood.

ADHD can occur in people of any intellectual ability, although it is more common in people with learning difficulties. People with ADHD may also have additional problems, such as sleep and anxiety disorders.

What you might not know is that there's another side: Hyperfocus. The tendency for children and adults with ADHD to focus very intently on things that do interest them. At times, the focus is so strong that they become oblivious to the world around them.  It can be a serious advantage if you can effectively channel all that attention and energy into work that makes a difference.
