Chapter One
New story!
“This is incredibly messed up!” whined Diane Brown, my best friend since kindergarten. “My parents are SO unorganised! Why the hell couldn’t they plan a trip in time for summer vacay?”
I chuckled. “Hey, remember last summer? You were partying in New York, while I was stuck here, all by myself-and worse, it was pouring rain every single day. Without fail. And literally EVERY single teenage had fled Avery Woods, remember? Imagine me! At least now you have Isaac.”
I was referring to Diane’s 2-month boyfriend, who was devoted to Diane, but was (no offence to Diane or anything) badly treated by Diane. Diane was constantly showered by cute love-heart shaped candies, flowers, chocolates, teddy bears, necklaces and cards, but she just considered them as what every boyfriend should give their girlfriend every day. Let’s just say that my best friend has high standards.
It’s not that she hates Isaac or anything, but she’s not the type who likes to spend her life 24/7 with her boyfriend and constantly go on a bazillion dates and snuggle up all the time. Diane loves a relationship that is quite casual in a way, and a relationship where they can talk about different things and they can last a full week without each other. You know what I mean?
Poor Isaac doesn’t seem like that type of guy...who knows how long HE’S going to last.
Diane unhappily plopped down on my bed, letting out a huff. “Yeah, but Isaac...I think I’m going to dump him soon. He’s too clingy to me, and he’s so god damn fluffy and mushy. He calls me babe, Marcella! You know that’s my ultimate hate word!”
Didn’t I tell you? Poor Isaac, it wasn’t his fault that he loved Diane too much. But I suppose, he should’ve known. Knowing Diane, she probably set all the ground rules when they first met, and Isaac should’ve known that Diane is not one for mushy cuddles, slushy romance comedies and fluffy bunnies.
“Hey, at least go a little easy on the poor guy,” I told her, grabbing my yellow long-sleeved top with evergreen peace signs scattered all over the body. “Hey, should I bring this?”
Diane pursed her lips, studying the top, and then nodded. “Maybe you should like...cut off the sleeves, and make it a short-sleeved top? It’d look more hip.”
Diane is like my fashion consultant. She knows EVERYTHING there is to know about fashion. Why? Because her Mum is a judge on small fashion shows that happen in Avery Woods, and her Mum is part of Cosmic Fashions Industries, the most epic fashion company in Washington D.C. Also, Diane’s father works with fashion models, telling them how to position themselves and all that stuff, so Diane knows a fair bit about posture as well.
Compare her ubër-awesome parents to mine. Well firstly, my parents are divorced. When I was nine, my parents decided they both thought they didn’t really have anything in common-so it was a mutual decision. Mum decided to be the one to move, and decided to move to Nevada, where she had grown up. She left her stinky job as a cleaner, and now works as a receptionist for some big company. Dad works as an accountant, which helps us pay off all the bills. He works quite late, but on Saturday nights we always have father-and-daughter time, and watch some comedy and pig out on the Coke and Doritos.
But now, I was going to see Mum, who I hadn’t seen in a full year. Sure, we’d Skyped and chatted over the phone-but seeing each other face-to-face is completely different. And I was damn excited; because this was the first time I was leaving Avery Woods and going out into the open world. Mum had visited us (she stayed in a hotel) all the previous times, but this time, we’d decided to change it up. Mum insisted on paying for the travel fees, and then everything was sorted. I was going to Nevada.
