It was Valentine's Day... 8th grade. We had started dating in December. And when I say dating... I mean "dating" like calling each other boyfriend and girlfriend, and not even acting like a couple. But whatever... It seemed to be what kids were doing back then (lol I speak like it was SO long ago) So I was walking to my locker with my best friend Emma, and I open my locker... And boom. Streamers. Flowers. Chocolates. Then I turned around and he was standing there and he asks, "Megan? Will you be my Valentine?" I was so dazzled by it that I started crying. Right there in the middle of the hallway. "Awe sweetie," he said softly and gave me a hug and told everyone to leave. Then he asked, "better?" And I said "yeah." And then he just stood there in the hallway holding me.
I know it sounds stupid... But I found that such a gentle thing to do! Like you're an 8th grade boy... and the number one thing on your mind is... Making a girl feel special? That's awesome! So anyways... We became a big thing. Everyone knew that Megan and Joel were the couple of the century. Not because of popularity or anything, but because of how our relationship was. It's real. It's romantic, but we have a deep friendship somehow buried into the relationship. We have a strong connection. We know everything about each other, from our most embarrassing stories of child hood, to our deepest, darkest secrets. All of my friends have visions that their children will call us aunt Megan and uncle Joel. (Well, that's some close friend ship.)
The first time he met aunt Shirley was my freshman year of high school. She had cooked chicken Parmesan and pasta that night, as if she was trying to make a first impression of her own. The moment before we sat down to eat, he pulled out my chair and said, "my lady." (Like the old fashioned way, almost like "mu-lady") aunt Shirley looked at me, but only with her eyes so he wouldn't notice. She signaled, yes. He is the one. I know it already. I signaled back, I know.
So I don't have a fatherly figure. So next greatest thing? Yep. Aunt Shirley. She started her first question. "So, Joel. What intentions do you have for my niece?" It was very awkward because he had just shoved a mouthful of saucy chicken and cheese in his mouth. He chewed quickly, so he could answer. I let out a soft giggle and then cupped my mouth, thinking I offended him. But all he did was laugh. And then Aunt Shirley laughed. It broke the tension. "I'm just messing with ya!" Aunt Shirley says with a slight laugh. "You seem like a nice boy and anybody that makes my little Megan happy, makes me happy." I blush in embarrassment and put my hand on hers across the table. "Awe," I here Joel say. I pull my hand away quick, embarrassed to be having a full of love moment with my aunt.
The rest of the night went smoothly... Joel and Aunt Shirley really got along. That made me happy. After dinner me and Joel went on a walk around our neighborhood. "Whoa. I can finally breathe!" I said, taking deep breaths because I am still nervous from our little "meet and greet" inside.
After walking a couple blocks, he stopped me. And he kissed me. That's all I can say... He kissed me. It wasn't full on making out... But it wasn't a peck... It was romantic and simple and pure and I'll remember that night for the rest of my life.
When we got back home his mom was there to pick him up. I had met her before and she was totally chill with me... So I wasn't nervous or anything. When he left I just watched the car slide off the drive way, through my bedroom window. And I cried. I cried out of joy because I had found the love of my life.
