"Miss Lawrence, please concentrate! This is very important." I turned away so Mrs Luck couldn't see me roll my eyes.
"Not concentrating huh? I'm very disappointed Maisie." I slapped Masons arm as he sat down, 10 minutes after class started.
"There's hardly any point, school finishes soon."
He shrugged and slumped down in his chair. I could feel his stare boring in to the side of my head, he didn't look away when I glanced at him so I waited another minute until I couldn't stand it anymore.
"Will you stop staring at me!"
He ignored me as he carried on musing. "Something’s up, what is it?"
There was no use lying I couldn't be bothered to deny anything he would find out sooner or later. "I'm going to break up with Liam tonight."
He was silent for a few moments then he said "Don't.
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me."
"Well I didn't ask for your opinion."
"Why would you want to do that anyway?"
"It’s none of your business."
"Well I'm making it."
At the same time as my mouth opened so did Mrs Lucks. "Maisie! Detention tomorrow night." She barked.
"But-"
"No buts, just be there.” And you can wipe that smile of your face Mason because you will be joining her."
I looked across at him; he was just sat there looking like he didn't have a care in the world. This was his fault.
The rest of class I didn't speak a word to him; I just got on with my work. Outside he went in the other direction and I saw him go out of the main doors and into the parking lot. Then I saw Liam and narrowly avoided him. I couldn't stand the guilt I was feeling and knew I couldn't bare pretend everything was fine between us.
So I ate dinner alone but I was used to it by now nobody looked anymore they just acted like I wasn't there, even girls I used to talk to quite a bit. The other day I heard Megan Saunders gossiping she said she couldn't understand why Liam had put up with me for this long and I questioned myself about it as well.
The rest of the day went at a snail’s pace, I spoke to Liam once and didn’t see Mason at all it was the last lesson of the day and Mrs Hargrove’s voice was like nails down a chalk board; almost unbearable.
"I'm home!" I called.
"Oh hi Maisie. Good day at school?"
I walked into the living room and sat down next to her. "It was fine."
"Okay well I'm going out tonight, I'm meeting up with some old school friends is that okay?"
"Yeah, sure." I went to make my mum a coffee and made myself a hot chocolate then I went to my room. I sat down on my bed with jasper at my feet and turned my laptop on. As I was waiting for it to load I looked around my room. As my eyes scanned over my dressing table something stopped me from looking further.
Stuck under the frame of the mirror was a folded piece of red paper. Curious I padded over to it and pulled it off the mirror. The paper smelt of smoke and lavender that was somehow pleasant, I had always loved the smell of smoke.
I turned the piece of paper around in my hand to find that it was an envelope with my name written in loopy writing. I opened it and inside there was a photograph torn down one side and a piece of paper.
