chapter 1
I pulled up the red satin sleeves. the lace on the end lightly tickled my freshly washed skin. I pulled the yellow cord on the front tightly across my chest and tied it in a darling bow. I looked into the large circular mirror on top of my makeup table running my fingers through my red hair catching and pulling on all the little knots my brush had missed. I split my hair into three sections then gently braided it down my back. I grabbed the small copper gear earnings and poked them into the two holes in my ears. then looked back into the mirror.
Merita had already done my makeup. My eyelids were covered in a deep Scarlett. The tips were golden. A deep black line of the eye liner ran from the point of my eye out like an Egyptian but with some Victorian flare.
"You look beautiful." I felt the chain of a necklace thwack against my neck.
"Dad." I said a bit annoyed.
I looked his happy smiling reflection his brown eyes looked like deep chocolate seas they looked so happy. His light red hair combed over. His sideburns trimmed to perfection. He was wearing a red vest over his puffy shirt. His neckerchief was tucked into his vest he was wearing his black slacks and his light brown shoes.
"Just look at you, just like your mother." His smile widened as he finished clasping the chain.
The necklace had a bunch of tiny silver, copper, and gold gears attached together to make the chain. The charm on the middle was a copper key that was about the size of a normally house key. It had a large oval shaped hole in the top were it strung on the chain. There was a small red ruby on the bottom by the teeth. The teeth were two beautifully shaped horns.
"Dad it's stunning." I gasp.
"But it is nowhere near your beauty." He smiled even wider.
I quickly stood up from the Stoll and embraced him. He lightly rubbed my back.
"Dad, I'm turning 17."
"Yes Eva I know that"
"Im worried.
" worried about what?
"You know, the leads."
"Yes what ever about them?" He tried to back out but I hugged him closer.
"What if I never find my the other half?"
He sighed. I bet if parents dread one thing in the world it's having to talk about leads, or maybe it's the birds and the bees.
"Eva." He grasped my shoulders and held me in front of him. "You will find the other half."
" but how can you be so sure?" I start going off on the rant.
"Eva don't ask me again, it is your turning day go and enjoy it. Everyone is down stairs waiting for you." He holds out his arm for me to take.
"Ok." I slowly breath and out.
I take his puffy sleeve covered arm and let him lead me out of the comfort of my bedroom and into the awkwardness of my changing day.
We walked down the spiral staircase that lead from my private quarters into the main foyer. I winced every time my shoes connected with the wooden stairs to make a loud thump. I glanced over at papa. He was smiling. I wanted to make him so proud of me.
