meredith's pov:
today was the day. I sat in the car, pep talking myself, trying to imagine how much better my life would be with a child. I was nervous to meet her. what if I gave off the wrong impression? what if everything went totally and utterly wrong?
I finally mustered up enough courage to walk into the adoption center. as soon as I walked in, I saw her and butterflies flew into my stomach. she was gorgeous and wonderful, more than I imagined, all I could do was smile.
I then walked into the office to talk with ms.murry, who seemed to be fairly overweight and was currently filing some papers. as soon as I sat down, she stared at me with disgust. she looked me up and down, looking unimpressed while I offered a smile nervously towards her.
"why are you here?" she asked in an uninterested manner.
"um, I'm here to meet emma. you see, I'm thinking about adopting a child and-" she cut me off.
"I don't want to know your whole life story," she said monotone. "EMMA GET YOUR BUTT IN HERE" she yelled. obviously she wasn't very polite.
outside I heard scrambling, so loud, as if the house was on fire and everyone was running for their lives. the door was open and closed in a millisecond and before I knew it, emma was standing new to ms.murry, across the desk from me. her head was down and she didn't dare look at me. she was nervous, just like me. except I wasn't young anymore, I couldn't curl up into a ball and hide from the world. I had to face my fears.
"meet emma. she's not very special, just a brat like the rest of 'em," she said numbly, like it was just normal routine.
I sat there unable to function properly; shocked. I couldn't believe anyone could say something like that about a kid. I looked over at emma and studied her. she had beautiful blonde curls and emerald eyes. freckles covered most of her olive skin. she was dressed in plain black leggings and a tie-dye tee shirt.
"well, it's nice to meet you emma. I'm happy to say I'll be your new mother once I sign these few papers," I said, smiling the whole time.
her face lit up like a lightbulb, and the butterflies returned to my stomach. The good kind though. the ones you get on your favorite amusement park roller coaster. I felt better than i had in years. I filled out the paperwork, which took quite a long time, and went to tell emma it was time to go.
she didn't look disappointed. in fact, she grabbed her stuff and ran to my car in less than a second. I followed her to my ford edge, got in the front seat, and let out a long breath. I could see her in my rear view mirror, beaming with beauty and happiness, and for once, I was happy.
