Harry's POV

“She’s just a friend,” I told the boys, turning back to them. “Yeah, yeah. That’s why you sneaked out of the club with her the other day,” slurred Darren, and a roar of laughter followed. Oh these boys. This conversation would probably not even be remembered in the morning, so I decided to say nothing. The boys had been teasing me about this girl we met that they thought I liked. She was pretty, but she was not at all my type. There would be plenty of time anyway, to find someone nice here. Not that hooking up with someone was on my to-do list. Walking ahead of them, lifting my arms above my head, I inhaled the cold sea air. It felt like heaven, if heaven or hell even exist.

Coming here was probably the best decision I’d ever taken. Graffen Island. I had a good feeling about this place, like something good was going to happen. It had taken a lot of persuasion from the lads to bring me down here, but now I regretted nothing. Woken up by the sun every morning, good ol’ rainy Stadfordshire back in my home country felt like a million years away. As much as I loved Britain and its ladies always covered up with their flattering coats whatever be the time of the year, nothing could quite beat the buzz I got from waking up on the beach every day.

I’d only been here for a week now, but I already felt like I belonged to this place. The island wasn’t that big, so I knew all the nooks and corners by the third day. I wish I had come to Saint Peter’s at night sooner though. Everything looked so much more beautiful. Tonight was a full moon night and the water glistened with a silver lining. The noise from the pub we’d just come from was faint, and the water lapping under the pier and against the docked boats was the most beautiful sound I’d ever heard. I settled on the word ‘pure’. This was what Saint Peter’s was at night. Pure.

I realized the boys’ drunk racket sounded far away, so I looked back to see they had plopped down on the sand, messing around. I continued down the pier, humming Fly me to the moon, let me play among the stars…

It was then that I saw a tiny frame sat at the end of the pier, a shadow barely discernible because of the darkness. There was something about her, something about the way she inhaled deeply, her chest rising, that stopped me in my tracks. I was completely mesmerized by the intimate moment I was witnessing. I couldn’t tell if her eyes were open or closed, but she flinched and her arm twitched at her side. And then she was still, completely oblivious to where she was. I could almost feel the pain of her memories.

Entranced, I walked to the girl, stopping only a few steps away from her. In my heart, I just knew I had never seen anyone as beautiful as her. Pale arms holding her knees close to her chest, facing the sky and her long silver locks gently tousled by the light breeze, she looked so vulnerable. I found myself wishing I was holding her tight and telling her, “I’ve got you. I won’t let go now.”

“Mate! Mate, come on over. Let’s go,” a voice drifted over to me, bringing me back to reality. I don’t know how long I stood there, just watching her in the moonlight looking like an angel, carved out of marble. She didn’t hear anything. She was in her own world.

Reluctantly, I turned away from her, jogging my way to the boys, not quite understanding what it was that I was feeling.
