Chapter Two

The first day was flatly orthodox compared to previous years. I attended all of my classes for the day, and now it was time for a lunch break. I sat down, alone, at a cafeteria table. Friends were pointless as long as I had the Lord by my side. He is my best and only friend I'll ever want or need. I unwrapped a cafeteria-made tuna fish sandwich, but before I ate, I gave thanks for my meal. "Dear Lord," I spoke aloud, "thank you for providing me with food and nourishment. Thank you for giving me the blessing of education, and supplies to further it. Amen." I then took a bite, and closed my eyes. "So, God, how's everything up there?" I asked the Lord. "I bet it's amazing, like a paradise in which I could never imagine or grasp at. I hope beyond hope that someday, I will join you in everlasting life. You know, sometimes that's all I think about, and how lucky I am that I have been blessed with life on your Earth, and life in Heaven with–"

I was interrupted by an unfamiliar voice. "Hey!" the voice spoke. "Can I sit here?"

I slowly opened my eyes in a flutter, to reveal a boy, seemingly my age. He bore a perfectly combed, gelled head of brown hair, and eyebrows to match the pigment. Underneath those thin, but bold brows were a pair of deep blue eyes, resembling the hue of the ocean. His cheekbones resided high upon his face, which was smooth and unmarried by boils or scars. He wore a red, patterned polo shirt with a collar, and khaki long pants, rolled up at the bottoms. I stared at him, and did not speak. "Um? Hello there? Is it cool if I–"

I sharply interrupted him. "Oh, of course!" This made him jump a bit, but he seemed collected soon afterward, for he was elated that I responded.

"Oh great! Thanks, I'm new here, and there aren't any seats left." He sat down, as I just stared at him, sizing him up. "Um anyway, I'm Theodore! I think I have Honors English with you."

"Yes, you do."

"What was your name again? I want to say... Dallas? Or Daniel?"

"Daemon."

"Awesome! Nice to meet you! Well, anyway, I was in line for food, and I asked for pizza, and they gave me chicken. Haha!" I responded with silence.

"So... Do you have any friends here? I'd love to meet some new people!"

"Yes."

"Oh cool! Where are they?"

"He is all around us. He dwells inside of us. And he is the only friend I'll ever need."

"Oh, um, okay. What's his name?"

"The Lord only carries a name of absolute power and glory. He is God."

Theodore seemed uncomfortable and unsettled. "Oh, well great."

"What's the problem? Shouldn't you be praising his name? Why do you hide from him, instead of basking in his glory?"

"Well, to be honest, the whole religion thing isn't really for me."

"What?" I angrily spat.

"I don't know, I just don't think– and absolutely no offense to you at all."

"Continue."

"It's just that... I don't really think that God... Exists."

"What?" I bellowed with absolute astonishment, as I leaped up and slammed my hands on the surface of the metal table, causing Theodore to cower and shrink as far as he could away from me. "How can you say such blasphemy? That kind of heresy will damn you straight to hell! You shall burn under the wrath of Satan, you fool!"

By this point, I had attracted the attention of the entire cafeteria body. I glanced upon their dumbfounded faces, as I gritted my teeth with rage. I raised my voice and I address the onlookers. "This man is a sinner! He speaks the word of Lucifer, for he is tainted and corrupted!" I darted my glance toward Theodore, and softened my voice. "Tell me once again. What did you say?"

Theodore slowly arose from his cowardice. "I said," he began with a nervous gulp, "that I don't believe that there is a God." His expression became angrier. "And you know what? You have no right to tell me what to believe or not to believe. You will not tell me what to do, do you understand?"

Our tenseness and aggravation seemed symmetrical. His face was a bright hue of red, as was mine, and our expressions were stern and grim. We seemed to hold a silent grudge-match, practically fighting with silence. But then, I could not restrain myself any longer. If he will insult the most heavenly, magnificent creator in such a manner, then he must be disciplined.

In a flash, I clambered over the table and was ready to pounce upon Theodore. But before I could do so, I pair of hands restrained me from leaping. I whipped around to view my blockade. Standing in front of me was a school administrator. "Come on, Daemon, let's go."

"No!" I blared as I forced restraint, "This perpetrator must be punished! He must be–" The school official yanked me off the table, cutting off my sentence. As I struggled to be free from his grasp, I shouted back at the crowd and to Theodore.

"So help me God, I will prove to you that the Lord is very real, oh yes, very real indeed! You will soon see for your very own eyes, the light of God!"

The man continued to drag me to the front corridor. As I was pulled, I heard the jeers and insults of the crowd.

"Calm down."

"Chill dude!"

"Freak!"

While I exited the room, I uttered one last phrase. "You shall all see the light of God!" The doors shut behind me, and I was beckoned down the hall with the administrator to an unknown destination.
