Serenade in blue
By Lee porter

The ballroom was dressed to the nines, billowing red velvet curtains hung from ceiling to floor, garnishing the walls. A large and opulent chandelier hung directly above the dance floor. Up on the stage a large band played as a young singer sang smoothly and sweetly. A banner hung above the bar which read 'say goodbye to the boys 1941' in large black letters. Young ladies and their military sweethearts littered the dance floor dressed in beautiful ball gowns while their handsome partners were adorned with their best military dress. Around the edge of the dance floor was perfectly placed, gently lit tables where people sat drinking cocktails and shorts. Talking, laughing and sharing a moment.
at one table sat a young girl in a beautiful blue ball gown, her hair was soft and wavy, neatly coiffed into a perfect half up, half down hairstyle. Her eyes were bright and sparkly and her pink lips were perfect and slightly glossed. She sat waiting for her airman.
The band struck up with serenade in blue by Glenn Miller, the young singers velvety voice danced around the ballroom. The couples on the dance floor began dancing slowly.
A young airman appeared at the entrance, browsing the room from where he stood, for his beautiful young lady. The airman wore his uniform proudly, his short blond hair was cut and parted perfectly to the left and his eyes were blue and dreamy.
As he spotted his girl in the blue ball gown he gasped, she looks sublime, he thought to himself. He straightened his tie and began to walk towards her. As he approached her, he placed a hand softly onto her shoulder and softly says " Katherine, it's me" she turned around to face the handsome young man, as she attempted to speak he gently hushed her, took her hand and led her to the dance floor. He placed his hand softly onto her waist and they began to slowly dance. Suddenly Katherine felt safe in her mans arms. She placed her head tenderly on his shoulder and whispered "I love you"
"I love you too" he replied
"Don't go" she said with a tear in her heart. He fell silent, pulled her in closely and they danced as though no one else was in the room.
" next time you are here ,in this ball room, make sure you wear that dress, if they play this song, it means I'm coming home to you my love" he pulled her in for a kiss as the band finished the song.
four months later, in the same ball room, Katherine sat at the same table, same dress on and same hairstyle as the night her man left. Couples scattered the dance floor and the tables, laughing, talking, sharing a moment.
Just then the band strikes up with serenade in blue again. That song! She thought. She spun around in her seat to see if she could see her airman. Nothing. She slumped sadly in her chair, her eyes welling up with tears. The young couples danced romantically to the music. As the song finished playing she heard "Katherine" behind her. She leapt up out of her chair and into the young mans arms. "You came back for me" she said with glee. The young man winced slightly in pain, his arm was in a sling and he was a little bruised, but non the less he was right there in front of her. He looked her in the eyes and said
"I'll always come back to my serenade in blue"
