Unlocking the door to the studio, I remove my sunglasses from my eyes and to my head. I sigh as I move into my station and unload my bags and coat. Plugging my phone into the stereo, shuffling to Of Mice & Men. Jessie suddenly burst through the door, panting as if she had been running for hours.
Jessie Rayes, one of my best tattoo artists here at Deringer Tattoos. Her pastel pink locks bounce as she walks to her station and turns the lights on. " Good morning Karesyn," the bubbly short girl says. I smile and give her a wave. Returning back to my station, I hear the bell on the front door ring, thinking it was Rian, my other tattoo artist, I move towards the front.
" Sorry it's really early and you guys just opened, but I would like a, well kinda big tattoo." My eyes meet with a pair of green ones. This man has chocolate brown hair and two full sleeve tattoos. His ears re stretched , like mine, and he has his eyebrow pierced. I give him a small smile and motion him to come into my station and to sit in the chair.
" Karesyn Adams," I say sticking my hand out. He gladly takes my hand in his," Troy." I smile as our hands drop and I sit in my chair. " So what would you like to have done today, Troy?"
" I want a tree on my back, with the roots fading down. Then at the top of the leaves, they fade into birds flying away. And on the right side of the tree I would like the quote, ' Your wings were ready, but my heart was not.' Then on the left, ' Roseanne Marie Baker, 2/14/92-10/30/2012."
I smile as I write down the design on my paper. " Okay ,Troy. I'll sketch it up and give you a call when it's ready." He smiles and stands up. He gives me his number, shakes my hand, and leaves. As I begin to sketch up his tattoo, Jessie and Rian bombard my station and start with many questions.
" You got his number," Jessie exclaims. Rian shakes his head and says," are you guys going on a date or something? Are you guys gonna hook up?" I roll my eyes and turn my attention back to the design. " Yes I got his number, but for professional business only. No we are not going to date, and no we aren't going to hook up."
At this comment, Rian huffs and stomps off like a 5 year old. Continuing my piece, I ask Jessie a question. " Will you do a tattoo on me once I'm free? I would do it myself, but you know, you kinda can't tattoo your own back." She smiles from ear to ear and nods yes. I thank her and tell her to get back to work.
*1 hour later*
" Okay, Troy, are you ready?" he nods and I fire up my machine. I slowly start my piece and make small talk with him. " Who's Roseanne?" I know, kind of personal Karesyn, but I mean, an attractive man getting a memorial tattoo for a woman, you'd like to know too, right? " She was my adoptive mom. She adopted me when I was 6, and she loved and treated me as if I were her own child. Sadly she passed away of cancer almost 4 years ago." I wiped away the excess ink and continued to pierce his skin with needles. " I'm sorry for your loss, Troy." He didn't say anything, only nodding. I didn't extend the topic anymore and continued.
*3 hours later*
" Okay you're finished!" I wiped the fresh ink down and applied some Auqaphor cream to it. Telling him how to care for it and how much I enjoyed putting the piece on him, I collapsed on the couch in the front lounge. After lunch I have 3 appointments and then Adam said he'd stop by with some news. This day is going to be the death of me.
