Jeremy leads me out into the street, and I gasp, stopping short and staring. The city was alive! There were people walking quickly back and forth along the sidewalk, crossing the street, and ducking into buildings. Cars whizzed past, blasting their horns and stopping abruptly as traffic lights suddenly turned red.
“Something wrong?” Jeremy asked, concern evident in his voice. I shake my head, and tear my eyes off the city to meet his gaze.
“I wasn’t expecting it to be so…” He smiles and finishes for me.
“Realistic? Life-like? Yeah, it gets a little weird sometimes. Thing is, we’re still in a dream, but only the most advanced dreamwalkers have complete control over their dreamscape.” I take a step back into the alley as a man hurries past, almost running into me.
“So…these people are here of their own accord? You didn’t dream them up or anything?” He shrugs.
“Well, it depends how you look at it. They are here because this is what my knowledge of a city is. Busy with cars and people. If I wanted a completely empty city, it would require a lot more concentration and skill. I could do it, but I would have to meditate on it for a while before I would be able to relax my mind and walk around in the empty city.” I nod, starting to understand.
“Okay, so if I imagined a train station, there would be trains coming and going, even though I didn’t specifically imagine the trains.” He smiles.
“Exactly! You dream the idea of a place, and all the details and natural things you’d find there automatically appear.” I gesture behind me.
“Like the trash in the alley.” He laughs and claps his hands together once.
“Like the trash in the alley! You’re a fast learner.” I toss my hair over my shoulder and say proudly.
“I know.” He laughs and suddenly an idea strikes me.
“Oh hang on a minute! What if I imagined the TARDIS? Would the Doctor just pop out and offer me to go explore the stars with him?” Jeremy raises his eyebrows at me and then frowns.
“Hmmm, I don’t know. In theory, the Doctor could appear, and your mind would create scenarios based on what you know about him and the TARDIS, and it’s possible that you could travel with him.” My eyes widen and I can’t help looking extremely excited.
“Oh can we try it? Please, please, please!!” He laughs and shakes his head.
“Not today, but maybe sometime. I’d be interested to see what happens, not to mention meeting the Doctor would be awesome!”
“You’re a Whovian?” He smiles and shrugs.
“A Time Lord, who travels through time and space in a blue police box, saving the world and altering history, which doesn’t even scratch the surface of what it really is, who wouldn’t love it?”
“Oh now I want to see the TARDIS! Can’t we try now?” He hesitates, then reluctantly shakes his head.
“No…I don’t want to risk it yet. I would be barely experienced enough to try and you need more training. We’ll do it someday though, promise.” I sigh resignedly.
“Okay fine, let’s go on an adventure that’s more my level. Where do we start looking for your dreamscape?” He grabs my hand and pulls me out onto the sidewalk.
