Chapter 2: Best friend

“If I was your best friend,

I’d want you around me all the time,

I’ll be your best friend,

If you’ll promise you’ll be mine”

“What’s up E.” my homeboy since 6th grade, Jonathan, said walking up to me in the hallway.

“Nothin’ much play boy. Glad to be back at good ole Carver high.” I replied giving him some dap.

“I know right. I actually missed this school over the break.”

         “Yeah me too dude.”

“Yeah I know we ain’t get to kick it that much since I went out of town for christmas break so catch me up how’s my little Persia doing?”

“Bad as ever. She walking now so you know she be getting into stuff. Yesterday she came in my room, got my Sean John off the dresser, and poured it all on the carpet. I was so pissed you know I hate whoopin’ her but I had to pop her on her hand. I can’t have her getting into all my stuff.”

“Dude don’t be poppin’ my Persia. You know she jus a baby.” He said giving me a little shove.

“That baby will be one in three weeks. And how about I send her to your house and let her pour all your stuff out.” I said defending my action.

“Aww naw we can’t be doing that.” He said laughing.

“Exactly. So just let me handle my baby.”

“Anyway school just started and guess who already asking about you?” He said changing the subject.

“Who would that be?” I said wondering who this person was.

“Maya dude.” He said waiting for my reaction.

“Fareal?” I said a little excited. Maya was the finest girl in the school, and really the only girl that wasn't tryna give ya boy any play. I just didn't get it how she go from acting like a nigga don't exist to asking my bro about me.

“Yeah dude she came up to me and asked if I had talked to you lately and if you were at school, cause she needed to ask you something. So I was like yeah and then she asked me if you had been checking for any females lately. So I told her I didn’t really know, but then again I didn't think you were.” He replied.

I smiled a little; it actually made me feel good to know that Maya had been checking up on a brotha.

“Dang dude this girl got you wide open!” Jonathon exclaimed.

“Man whatever ain’t no girl got me wide open.” I replied defensively.

“Then why you start smiling so hard when I told you she asked about you?” he said.

“Dude I just can’t smile to be smiling? You want me to look pissed off all the time?” I said laughing.

He just laughed and said, “Yeah uh huh.”

“But I wonder why she really asked though. You think she feeling me?” I asked.

“Who knows? But I got to get to this history class before the bell my teacher be trippin so I’ll see you at lunch.”

“Cool. I need to be getting to my class to.”

As I was on my way to my English class I felt somebody tap me on my shoulder from behind. I turned around to find my homegirl/next door neighbor, Samantha. “What’s up?” I said as she came up next to me.

“Nothing much. Omg I really do not want to go to this English class right now! I’m so not in the mood.” She said.

“I don’t want to go up in there either. But what’s wrong with you?” I asked.

“Nothing I’m just a little pissed because I found out that Travis was cheating on me with Rochelle nasty ass! But it’s whatever fuck him I don’t need him.” She said.

“Damn that’s fucked up! Wasn’t ya’ll together for like four months?” I asked.

“Yeap four months of my life wasted. And that’s the bad part about it they been fuckin around for two months! It’s not like she ain’t know we was together, when I see that bitch I’m going to fuck her ass up!” she said with an elevated voice.

I could tell she was getting upset all over again so I tried to calm her down, “Look Sam you don’t need to be fighting you got too much going for you. And trust me that nigga ain’t even worth it like you said fuck him. If he wants to be a dog let him be a damn dog. But I know that I’m not just finna sit her and watch you fight over some dog nigga.”

She let out a huff, “Yeah I know. I just don’t know if I can stand to look at him or her today I might just lose my mind.”

I’ve known Samantha since I was six years old so I know when she says something she means it, “Look Sam I really don’t want to see you getting hype with anybody today and I know you got class with both of them so lets just go.”

“You talking about skipping.” She asked.

“Yeah come on. I drove the car to school today so we can just go.” I replied.

         “Cool. Let’s go.”

                                    ·                 ·                 ·

“So how you find out about Rochelle and Travis?” I asked Samantha as I sat in the swing next to her at the park we use to go to all the time when we were little.

“Travis told me. Well he didn’t want to tell me he just slipped up and end having to tell me.” She said letting out a little snicker.

I let out a chuckle, “Haha how he slip up?”

“Well last night we had got into an argument. And he was like damn Rochelle you always fuckin with me. So I asked him did he just call me Rochelle, and he was like naw I said.. he just stopped mid sentence because he couldn’t think of a lie quick enough. So I just kept asking him where Rochelle came from and he finally ended up telling me that they had been messing around for a while. But he was sorry and they were through and he still loves me and wants to be with me. So I just told him to go fuck himself and get the fuck out.”

         I couldn’t help but laugh.

“But on the real though I’m acting like I don’t really still care about him but I do. Especially since I lost my virginity to him and all. Remember how happy I was when I told you about it? I thought that was the thing I had to do to keep him from cheating on me. As you see though it didn’t work so now I just feel stupid.” She said as if she was about to cry.

I hated seeing Sam like this, other than Jonathan she was my best friend. Seeing her all upset like this lowkey had me wanting to kick Travis ass myself.

“Man Sam don’t cry dude, he ain’t worth it. But shit, Rochelle must got that fye between her legs to make him cheat on you.” I said laughing.

“E shut the fuck up!” She said punching me in my arm laughing. “Yo ass always tryna crack jokes and shit!”

“Well you know I had to say something to get a smile back on your face.”

“Well thanks, I appreciate it. I can always count on you.” She said giving me a hug. She looked down at her phone, “We might as well head back to school we done missed 5th and 6th period.”

         “Yeah let’s go.”
