Some promises are just meant to be broken.
This was the quote running through Maine's mind frequently these days. She looked at the ring she's wearing and remembered the promise that Rj made two years ago.
"Maine, this ring is a promise of my commitment to this relationship and our future. I promise to make you a priority in my life. I promise to love you and ONLY you."
M: *scoffs* Huh, what a priority I turned out to be.
Rj was supposed to pick her up this evening from the airport. It is their 2nd year anniversary and she made sure that she would arrive back in the Philippines to celebrate it with him.
The plan was that he will pick her up, bring her to the condo so she can freshen up a bit then they would go out on a date to celebrate.
But Rj called her up as soon as her flight arrived, telling her that he had an emergency meeting and couldn't pick her up.
R: Babe, I'm sorry! A pressing engagement came up. Pinapunta ko dyan yung driver ko - he'll bring you home para hindi ka na maghintay sa service ninyo.
M: Hindi naman kailangan, kaya ko namang umuwi mag-isa.
R: *teasing* Syempre girlfriend kita, you deserve the best.
M: *rolls her eyes* Fine.
She then dropped the call without even saying goodbye. She then thought of what happened over the past 2 years.
Their first year together was great. They managed to meet frequently and go on escapades together.
They climbed Mt. Pulag together for his birthday, went to Boracay for her birthday and travelled to Japan together. They called each other frequently and made sure to leave each other sweet notes via instant messaging.
Things started to unravel when Rj had to cancel a date when he was asked by his big bosses for an urgent meeting. He was planning to request for another schedule but she agreed that he should attend it. She was disappointed but didn't want to be a nagging girlfriend.
M: Go, attend it, it could be a good project! Sayang ang opportunity! If sa akin yun mangyari, I'm sure you would cheer me on.
R: Of course! You would deserve it and more. After that, Maine always expected him to call at the last minute to cancel their dates. On the 3rd time it happened, she decided to be more flexible with her schedule at the airlines. She bid on lines that would take her out of the country more frequently and she also had to cancel a few dates due to her schedule.
They talked in passing about it but Rj always assured her that she is always his first priority and he is doing this for their future.
But what happened today is the last straw.
She deserves to be someone's first priority, not someone who can be picked up on the most convenient time.
She texted Rj, "We need to talk. Puntahan mo ako sa bahay bukas."
Getting out into the arrival bay, she quickly saw Rj's driver. Greeting his driver with a little smile, she hurried inside the car, turned off her mobile, then closed her eyes.
