Hawk-eyed fellow leans against
The yellow wall stained by the dusk
An icy smirk adorns his glance:
A sense our meeting was no chance.
A faint distraction tugs his gaze,
Inclines his head to where I see
A vehicle parked in the fog;
My heart yelps like a cornered dog.
The burr of engine stirs to life
The complex passive in his eyes
As he swoops towards me and I run
Thinking no no no, I’m done!
And so the race begins, for I
Am quicker than he thought I was
And darting into an empty yard
I hear him stumble, breathing hard.
Finding a foothold in this junk
I make the fence, am in a field
And sprint for the house, to hide
I lock the back door, once inside.
Race to the windows; close them fast
Bolt all the doors in all the rooms
From in the cupboard I dial a friend..
My cellphone gets no reception.
A boom! The sound of falling glass
I freeze, my breathing stills silent
And hear his boots hitting the floor;
Goes through, unlocking every door.
More voices sound, all flooding in,
I shiver, shrink against the wall.
“She can’t have left; she’s still in here –
Don’t tell me you can’t smell her fear.”
I close my eyes and concentrate
(The other eight will be here soon,
We still don’t know just what we’ll find - )
“It’s her! She’s there inside my mind!!”
Lights flash bright into my face
Dragged out, I shake and push them off
But with a click I am restrained
My legs, my arms, all chained.
Adrenaline and anger mix, and
Laughter of an uncouth sort
Bubbles out madly, with a shriek
I face my captors and… I speak;
“Go now, you three, back to the street.
Call off your friends; send them away.
And you, unlock my feet and hands,
Then stand by for further commands.
You there, please shoot the rest,
And” BAM “don’t resist” BAMBAM “-oh, good.
Now for yourself,” BAM “…that all of them?
Anyone else here? Guess not.”… (Ehem.)
Startled I see one, with his smirk,
So fearless: and it is in vain,
For soon he’ll be dead – then (Surprise!)
Shocked, meeting his hawk-eyes.
