She was barley a few weeks old. The mare legs as thin as broomsticks, she always remained close to her mother. Tonight however was diffrent, her mother was anxious. The forest promised lush grass to graze on with freedom now that she had lost her herd. However it also promised danger.
The mare's mother trotted in a circle nervously constantly looking behind her.The mare had decided to suckle on her mother as her hunger had set in. Usually her mother would swish her tail while she was suckling, tonight however, she was dead still. Her ears perked up as she looked into the forest on high alert.
It was dead silent in the forest, until a low growl emitted from the depths of the forest. Wasting no time the mother urgently nudged her child into a gallop. In the most mangled part of the forest sprang an pitch black wolf. The wolf sprinting after the mare and her mother snapping his jaws in hunger.
The mother now frantic for her childs life searched for an pathway for safety. She galloped slightly in front of her child and made a sharp turn right swirling to avoid hitting the tree's,glancing back to her child she saw she had did the same.Up ahead lay a clearing that lead to a village, if the mother could reach the clearing her and her child would be safe.
Another growl came from the side of the mother, to the side of her ran another wolf snarling at the mares side and hind legs. The mother halted and reared up on the wolves kicking frantically as her child shot up ahead.
The mother turned to follow the child when another wolf sprang out of the forest and bit down on her hind leg locking its jaws. The mother screeched in pain as she tried to shake the wolf off of her, her child frightened by the agony in her mothers moan stopped and looked back.
Her mother still struggled to fight the wolves but looked up and beckoned her child to go.The mare was hesitant but after another yell of pain she turned back around and galloped after the clearing. Fire burned in the mares lungs and fear pelted her soul, she didn't want to look back but she couldn't fight the urge to check to see if her mother was behind her. She hoped she was behind her.
When she had looked back her mother was collapsing and everything seemed to go in slow motion. The mare watched as she saw every fiber of hair fall with her mother as her mother collapsed. She saw her nerves crumbling down in her legs as she gave out. She saw her mother beckoning , begging for her to run before she heard it.
The mare petrified continued to run, her mothers agonized groans scarring her for life. The black wolf had a scar above his left eye, as scar she would never forget.
