Chapter 1
"FIONA!!!! COME HERE NOW YOUNG LADY!!!"
You roll your eyes. Less than a minute after getting home from school, and your mum has already come up with something for you to do.
You walk into the kitchen. It's worse than you thought. Your little sister, Cora, is running around with no pants on, and your mother is trying to chase her down, mop the floor, and hold your little brother Dylan all at once.
Your mum lets outs a sigh of relief when she sees you. "Oh, thank The Lord! Fiona please put Cora's trousers on. And then could you take her to the bakery? We need some bread, and I need her out of the house."
You grab the now screaming Cora and find her a pair of pants. "Come on Cora! We'll get you a jelly donut!"
Cora grabs your hand and cheerfully drags you out the door.
As you make your way down to the bakery, you're glad that Cora likes jelly donuts so much. At 4 years old, she is happy to disagree with most everything that you want her to do. And ever since your dad had to take on longer hours at work, your mum has been stressed out all the time. Especially with the demanding 2 year old Dylan.
When you get to the familiar bakery, you breathe in the warm and sweet smell of bread and pastries.
The manager, Barbara, sees you right away. She comes up to you and fusses with Cora's hair. "My two favorite girls! So nice to see you! I take it you want your usuals?"
You nod, but Cora blurts out, "No! I want a scone!"
"Please, Cora, remember to say please," you scold.
Barbara nods with a smile, and calls to the back, "Harry! Bring these lovely ladies a scone, will ya?"
As Barbara chats up Cora about her decision to order a scone, you begin to feel inpatient. What is taking the food so long? Ugh, it must be the scone.
Suddenly, you feel a tap on your shoulder. You turn around into the most beautiful boy you have ever seen. He has dark curly hair and large green eyes. You begin to feel self conscious about your ratty ponytail and school uniform.
"Erm, hey." This must be Harry. "Here's your scones..."
"Thanks, I appreciate it." You can't meet his eyes.
Barbara lets out a loud chuckle, making you both jump. "Oh, you teenagers! So shy! Let me introduce you. Fiona, this is my grandson Harry. Harry, these are my favorite customers, Fiona and Cora."
As you're still contemplating what to do, Cora struts up to Harry and sticks out her hand. "Hi, I'm Cora! I think you're really handsome!"
"Cora--" you begin, as you blush furiously.
But instead, Harry lets out an adorable belly laugh. "Well I think you're a pretty princess, miss Cora! And your sister isn't so bad either!"
When you look up, he winks, making your insides melt. Your blush turns to a shade of purple.
You quickly smile back and grab Cora's hand. "Come on Cora, mum wants us home."
"But--", Cora begins, just as Harry blurts out, "WAIT!!"
He grabs a piece of paper and scribbles something in it, then puts it in your bag.
"Ok, bye!" He smiles warmly at you again.
Halfway home, you venture to look into the bag. Your insides flip as you see what Harry put inside. On the paper, he had written his phone number, and a simple 'call me x'.
You giggle involuntarily and head back home.
